Pokémon Pokopia has an abysmal preorder bonus, but in fairness it’s not the worst one we’ve ever seen.
In what looks like Viva Piñata meets Animal Crossing, Pokemon Pokopia already seems like a breath of fresh air for a series trapped in limbo.
While games like Pokémon Legends: Z-A have attempted to break away from the series’ norm, any changes very rarely stick, and it sounds like Gen 10, while being set in a new region, will fall back on the tried-and-true formula the franchise is best known for.
Pokémon Pokopia feels different though so it’s a shame its preorder bonus is one of the lamest I’ve ever seen in. For those who missed it, it's a potted plant, and not a real potted plant but a digital one you can decorate with in-game.

Nintendo fans have ripped the bonus apart and after listening to the discourse it got us thinking about some of the worst preorder bonuses ever seen in gaming, here are a few examples below.

This One Is Infamous
The first bonus that sprang to mine was Infamous: Second Son’s glow-in-the-dark condoms. It’s funny because the game itself is actually quite good but this preorder just wasn’t it.
I’d have loved to have been a fly on the wall when that idea was not only pitched but celebrated as a good idea.

Marvel Vs Capcom Vs Preordering Players
Another perfect example of poor preorder bonuses are the “Infinity Stones” from Marvel Vs Capcom: Infinite.
This one makes a little more sense as the game itself is the weakest in the series so far, so when people opened their preorder boxes and saw cheap, plastic Easter eggs rather than shiny gemstones they were understandably ticked off. Then they had to play the game, good God.
Fallout 76’s Canvas Bag Blunder
It’s come a long, long way but when Fallout 76 first launched it was frankly embarrassing. Bethesda fans aren’t unfamiliar with bugs but this was excessive.
As a preorder bonus players were promised a gorgeous, branded, canvas bag that never showed up. What followed was an avalanche of complaints and months of back-and-forth as Bethesda attempted to quell the frenzy in a multitude of ways. There are several videos online documenting this and I’d recommend you check one out.
Is Pokemon Pokopia’s preorder bonus as bad as those? No, definitely not, but it’s not exactly good either.
A preorder bonus is supposed to be an incentive but I think you’d be hard-pressed to find a gamer who cares about a digital potted plan regardless of how much they like Pokémon.
