Legendary PC FPS gets free DLC expansion 30 years later

One of the fathers of first-person shooters has received a free DLC expansion to celebrate its 30th anniversary, and it adds loads of new content to the game.

When you’re asked to name some of the most important first-person shooters of all time, you’ll probably think of the big three: Doom (1993), Halo: Combat Evolved and Quake.

There are many more influential FPS games that could be named, but these three have a strong footing in the hearts and minds of millions of gamers.

It’s been a big year for all three, with Doom: The Dark Ages getting a major story DLC, Halo: Combat Evolved being remade into Halo: Campaign Evolved, and finally Quake getting a free anniversary update.

The Quake update is called Dawn of the Machine, and it’s huge, especially for a game that is 30-years-old.

As outlined in a Bethesda blog post, it adds some new enemy types to the game, like the Rocket Ogre, along with new weapons to add to your arsenal such as the Super Axe.

What’s most impressive, however, is the addition of 19 brand-new maps to play on, packed full of secrets to uncover.

The scale of this free DLC is incredibly cool, so we’re sure fans are eager to dive right in.

When does Quake: Dawn of the Machine and who can play it?

The good news is Dawn of the Machine is already out in the wild. It was dropped earlier today and is a free download for those who own the game.

The even better news is it’s not platform locked, so those on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC and Nintendo Switch/Nintendo Switch 2 can play it.

Last-gen consoles like the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are also supported by the new update.

It’s also worth pointing out that if you have a subscription to Xbox Game Pass Premium or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, you can do it at no additional cost on your console and PC. Cloud-streaming is also supported for those who want to try out the free streaming service.

Quake 2 is also featured amongst the same line-up.

Quake joins the likes of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with its new DLC

Also getting a new DLC expansion years after launch is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. It’s titled Songs of the Past and is expected to set the stage for the events of The Witcher 4.

It’s set for release sometime next year and will be featured as part of 2026’s Gamescom festivities, so keep an eye out for that.

Quake does have The Witcher 3 beat, though. The Witcher 3 launched over 10 years ago, and while a new DLC expansion 10 years later is impressive, it’s not exactly 30 years, is it?

We kid, of course; both games deserve their flowers, and we’re excited to jump into both expansions.
