During a virtual preview, we learned more about what to expect from the upcoming expansion, DOOM: The Dark Ages - Revelations, and it looks like it’s more of a sequel than the typical DLC.
This expansion has been roughly a year in the making, as confirmed by id Software’s Marty Stratton (Studio Director/Executive Producer) and Hugo Martin (Creative Director) during a Q&A, and it takes place directly after the events of the main game.
Revelations places the Slayer at his most vulnerable yet, cast into a purgatorial prison, stripped nearly bare of the armour and arsenal he once used to carve through the demon hordes of DOOM: The Dark Ages. But it won’t take long before he’s back to what he does best: ripping and tearing through anything that stands in his way, whether with his bare hands or whatever new weapons he can wrench from his enemies.

To escape this hellish stronghold, the Slayer must battle deadly new foes, uncover sinister secrets, and navigate brutal environmental challenges. Along the way, he’ll solve intricate puzzles, relearn combat techniques, and rebuild his strength from the ground up, ultimately unleashing a resurgence of fury so overwhelming that even the minions of Hell will learn to fear him once more.

Revelations will have a new story campaign as well as all-new endgame content. Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin said that, depending on the type of gamer, it will have roughly 10 to 12 hours of new content. They also added that it's split between roughly 60% of the story campaign and the remaining 40% into the endgame.
While most story details were kept under wraps for the campaign to avoid spoilers, we learned that the endgame content will have trials in challenging arenas for players to take on. It will have classic DOOM levels of yesteryear, and new content will be added regularly.
Players will have a new hub to explore, similar to the hub in DOOM Eternal, but on a much larger scale with plenty of secret paths and items to unlock. Marty Stratton and Hugo Martin teased that this new hub is heavily inspired by the Metroidvania sub-genre.
Speaking of DOOM Eternal, the combined content of the Revelations expansion is said to be twice the size of the two DLCs from the 2020 sequel, ‘The Ancient Gods - Part One and Part Two’.

Revelations will introduce the all-new Chain Spear weapon, a new toy that Marty and Hugo teased that players will need to master if they are to complete the expansion. This will be an alternative to the Saw Shield, which was introduced in the base game. Just like the Saw Shield, the Chain Spear will have multiple upgrade paths offering a variety of abilities to the player.
The Chain Spear has abilities such as allowing the Slayer to orbit enemies at rapid speeds, picking off foes at long distances, similar to a sniper or impaling them at close range. It can also be used to pull enemies towards you, sweep their legs, and to traverse an area.
The Chain Spear does seem to have similarities to the Meat Hook attachment for the Super Shotgun. However, by the looks of what we saw in the gameplay presentation before Q&A, the Chain Spear will encourage the player to constantly be on the move, whether it's killing enemies at close range and at a distance, or traversing the arena to your advantage.

There was no sequel teased following the Revelations expansion. Perhaps because DOOM: The Dark Ages is a prequel to DOOM (2016). So, we might assume that once this new story content is finished, its events may lead us straight into the 2016 reboot.
However, they did choose an interesting choice of words during the Q&A. They said that DOOM: The Dark Ages - Revelations will have no cliffhanger, which could suggest that this is the conclusion to this story arc.
Obviously, that statement could mean absolutely nothing, but it’s an interesting choice of words nonetheless. But it's entirely possible that when we’re treated to a new DOOM game in the future, we could speculate that it could take the series in a new direction. Only time will tell.
If you already own the Premium Edition of DOOM: The Dark Ages, you’ll be able to access the expansion at no extra cost at launch. If you don’t already own the Premium Edition but own the base game, you can buy the upgrade for £34.99/$34.99 via your digital storefront of choice.
DOOM: The Dark Ages - Revelations will be available on 7 July 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. It’s also available to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers at no extra cost.
