Elden Ring and Doom Collide in Upcoming New Game From Gaming Legend

It’s not DOOMed after all

The upcoming new game from the DOOM creator, inspired by FromSoftware’s Elden Ring, has been announced.

John Romero is a legend of the video game industry. He co-founded id Software and helped develop iconic franchises such as DOOM, Wolfenstein and Quake.

Sure, much like the vast majority of developers, John Romero has had his fair share of misses, but his legacy can never be in doubt. Simply put, without the likes of DOOM, Wolfenstein 3D and Quake, the industry perhaps wouldn't be what it is today, when it comes to the first-person shooter genre.

In 2022, it was announced that John Romero was working on a brand new IP under his own studio, Romero Games. “Exciting news! I'm working on a new FPS, and we're hiring,” he tweeted when announcing his new game is in production.

It was later revealed that the Romero Games project was being backed by Microsoft, but unfortunately, following a devastating round of layoffs by the tech giant, which also saw Rare’s Perfect Dark reboot starring Alix Wilton Regan as Joanna Dark cancelled, John Romero was forced to cancel his game, and employees were let go.

However, in October 2025, during an interview with Gamereactor, Romero teased that other publishers were showing interest in picking his project back up from the ground, but it’s been a bit quiet ever since.

Now, as reported by DualShockers, during a recent panel at Salón del Videojuego de Madrid 2025 in Spain, John Romero announced that he has a project in the works, but it’s not the game he was previously working on. It’s something different, redesigned and inspired by the aforementioned Elden Ring.

“So, we survived the cancellation of a huge game”, he said to the crowd. “There are a really good 110 people working on the game every day for years. The game has been basically completely redesigned.”

“This new game has nothing to do with the previous game, but it incorporates a lot of the elements we had in the previous game”, Romero continued. “We are not starting at ground zero. We have 50 million worth of a game. We can take pieces out of and put them into a brand new indie game.”

Romero also confirmed that a smaller team is now working on the new game, and it will be a shooter. Can we expect a game inspired by not only Elden Ring but also DOOM? Only time will tell.
