Xbox Game Pass subscribers might be sleeping on a true FPS legend, which is still getting new DLC expansions over 20 years later.
When the first-person shooter genre comes to mind, you’ll probably think of games like Doom and Halo: Combat Evolved.
Real gamers will think of Quake, though, especially after the recent release of its new, free Dawn of the Machine DLC expansion.
That’s right, a game that was released on PC in 1996 is still getting free DLCs over 20 years later.

For those who haven’t played, Quake sees players become the sole survivor of a cataclysmic interdimensional invasion.
A bit like Doomguy (or Doomslayer as he’s now called), Ranger is a battle-hardened soldier who’s having absolutely none of it, and sets out to thwart the invasion and any monstrous enemy that stands in his way.

Quake on Xbox Game Pass is a must-play for FPS enjoyers
Anyone who’s played one of the OG Doom games will feel right at home here, as it’s largely the same. In a 3D environment, you’ll sprint your way through each level on a mission to separate as much blood from creatures’ bodies as possible, with a growing arsenal of weaponry.
That’s just the base game. Once you’re done with that, you’ll then have access to five free DLC expansions, with Dawn of the Machine being the most recent release.
The new Dawn of the Machine DLC adds some gruelling new missions to the game in addition to some new weapons, like a sweet new axe to swing at unsuspecting foes. It also creates remixed versions of some classic Quake enemies for added challenge to veterans.
All in all, you’re looking at about 35 hours of content with the base game plus the DLC. That’s if you’re looking to do more than just beat the levels. If you look hard enough, there are loads of secrets to uncover, which all contribute to the game’s total completion.
Those who just want to blast through and have fun can expect around 20-25 hours of gameplay, depending on your skill level and chosen difficulty.
If you want to jump head-first into the action, you can skip the main game and dive into whatever DLC you fancy. It’s not exactly recommended, as even on the easiest difficulties they’re quite a challenge, but we’re not here to tell you how to play your video games. Dawn of the Machine is obviously worth checking out sooner rather than later while it’s still fresh.
You can access all of this with your Xbox Game Pass subscription. It’s included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and PC memberships.
The other Quake games are also included if you’re itching for more once you’ve rolled credits.
Quake is also available on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5, and even Nintendo Switch/Nintendo Switch 2 users.
