Cyberpunk 2077 fans received a little bit of news regarding the game’s sequel earlier this week, and it’s getting everyone a little excited.

A sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 was originally announced way back in 2022, just under two years following the game’s troubled release.

Using the codename Project Orion, details on the follow-up are light.

What we do know so far is that CD Projekt Red North America is working on the sequel, which has studios in both Boston and Vancouver, and that the game will run on Unreal Engine 5.

Considering CD Projekt Red also has its hands full with three Witcher games in production, plus a new IP in development, it’s likely we won’t see much of the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel for quite some time.

However, Cyberpunk creator Mike Pondsmith has now teased that the sequel could go to “another city” described as “Chicago gone wrong”, and it’s got fans excited about new possibilities.

“I swear there are signs talking about 2082 or something about a train to Chicago,” wrote one fan on Reddit.

Indeed, there are signs that appear in-game promoting a train line that can transit between Night City and Chicago in “under three hours”.

It might not actually be Chicago though, as this comment highlights: “‘Feels like Chicago’ does not mean the city will be there. So likely we’ll get something else.”

“I feel like there is plenty they could do with Night City still,” wrote another comment. “I think a sequel would be fine even without any new city if they just did different plots and made the city more active and more explorable.”

CD Projekt Red certainly has a good opportunity to reuse the Night City map for its sequel. It’s big enough that using it for only one game feels like a waste.

There’s a precedent for this, too.

Developers like Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio are famous for reusing the Kamurocho map in nearly every Like A Dragon game, and Rockstar Games did the same for its GTA 4 expansions.

The Cyberpunk 2077 sequel is still a ways off, considering we don’t even have an official title or release date yet.

However, we’ll probably know more about the setting once CD Projekt Red is ready to reveal the game.
