Free Pokémon Challenge is the 'Hardest Ever', Drops Ahead of Anniversary

A much more difficult proposition.

Pokémon fans can try out this brand new challenge mode which has just dropped ahead of the series’ 30th anniversary.

The Pokémon community is no stranger to setting themselves difficult challenges, and while the vanilla games tend to not be too difficult for seasoned fans, its massive ROM Hack community picks up the slack.

ROM hacks are essentially small code changes to classic retro video games to tweak the difficulty, appearance, or other aspects of it. These can then be modified and played via emulators to create a new experience.

Pokémon ROM hacks are a tale as old as time, with some hacks going back as far as the late 1990s. There are now hundreds on the market, and this latest one seems to be making a bit of buzz within the Pokémon community.

Titled Pokémon Yellow Kaizo, this new ROM hack is a remaster and upgrade of the earlier Pokémon Blue Kaizo which came out in 2014 (thanks, Screen Rant).

As co-creator CreamElDudJafar puts it, the mod is “designed to feel like Blue Kaizo, but be much more fun, harder and improve on quality of life features throughout the course of the game”.

There Are Plenty Of New Challenges Awaiting You In Pokémon Yellow Kaizo

This includes adding a hardcore mode, as well as bringing mazes back, adding more difficult trainers, and items being disallowed from being used in battle. That alone should pose quite the challenge!

The full list of changes is quite extensive, but some of the most notable ones include two difficulty modes: Hard Mode and Not Fun Mode.

I’m not sure how I feel about something called “Hard Mode” being the default here, but Not Fun mode includes perfect Diversification Values and Forced Set Mode, with no stat experience or badge boost.

Meanwhile, you can play through the entirety of Gen 1 in either Red, Green, or Yellow, with all 151 Pokémon able to be caught or evolved without trading.

Trade evolution Pokémon can now evolve by levelling up, and there are additional places to relearn and delete moves.

Trainers are also a lot more difficult this time around.

For example, gym leaders, Team Rocket, and your rival have had a buff in level, moves and parties, with some parties matching their appearance in the anime or Pokémon Let’s Go.
