It came as quite a surprise when, in Return of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker whips out a green lightsaber, despite only seeing Jedis using blue up to this point.
Of course, once the prequels rolled around, other Jedi had different colours, but for Luke Skywalker, who had to build his own lightsaber, viewers wondered where he got the green colour from.
If you want the official reason why George Lucas went with green for the third film, I’ll get to that in a minute.

For now, let’s have a look at a Reddit fan theory which is just lovely.
User tskszn explains their personal thoughts on why Luke’s lightsaber was green, saying, “Luke used Qui-Gon’s Crystal and Obi-Wan’s specifications to construct his lightsaber. Makes each’s connection with Anakin much more significant.”
Following this thought, another Redditor jumped in to agree that this was a great theory.
ZaltraxZ commented, “This is my personal favorite head canon in Star Wars. The blade that establishes a New Jedi Order that challenges the shortcomings of the old belonging to Qui-Gon is just so beautiful…it’s like poetry.”

This would be a lovely touch had Disney or Lucasfilm decided to honour that legacy in a small update with newer Star Wars films.
Of course, that isn’t the real reason, which doesn’t actually come down to any lore or secret information.
Now, if you want the real reason Luke’s lightsaber was green, it was answered many years ago.
It was simply because it looked better against the blue skies of Tatooine, where much of Luke’s fighting takes place.

Were he to have used a blue lightsaber, it would have blended in with the sky during the desperate escape from Jabba the Hutt.
I prefer the Redditor’s explanation and will forever see this as my own personal head canon.
