One of the most underrated PlayStation 2 games is coming to PS Plus for free

One of the most underrated games in the Onimusha series is coming to PlayStation Plus soon, and it needs to be played.

Alongside the likes of Resident Evil and Street Fighter, the Onimusha series is one of Capcom’s most popular properties, or at least it was.

Alongside its sequels, the Onimusha series had plenty of spin-offs, many of which would have flown under the radar. However, since 2006, the Capcom series has been on a long sabbatical with no new releases, not taking into account a couple of remasters.

Thankfully, that sabbatical is over next month with the release of Onimusha: Way of the Sword. Despite carrying no number, it’s considered to be the fifth mainline entry in the series. But before the first new game graces us with its presence in 20 years, PS Plus Premium subscribers can check out Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams at no extra cost.

Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams was released on PS2 in 2006

For whatever reason, and garnering respectable Metacritic scores, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams did not sell well by series standards.

For example, Onimusha: Warlords sold over a reported one million copies, Onimusha 2: Samurai’s Destiny nearly two million and Onimusha 3: Demon Siege about one and a half million copies. As for Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, it reportedly sold an estimated 640,000 copies.

What’s the story of Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams?

“Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams begins approximately 15 years following the annihilation of the infamous Japanese warlord Oda Nobunaga at Honno Temple,” reads the official description of the game.

“Another dark shadow now looms over Japan as Nobunaga's successor, Hideyoshi Toyotomi, has decided to align himself with the evil Genma forces. Assume the role of Soki, a young warrior who possesses incredible power, along with several other cohorts, to try and thwart Hideyoshi's pursuit for power.”

When is Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams coming to PlayStation Plus?

Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams was announced to be coming to PlayStation Plus during a June 2, 2026, episode of State of Play. As shared on Reddit, it will be coming to PS Plus Premium, that will be on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, courtesy of the Classics Catalog.

Can we buy Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams separately?

Only time will tell. For the most part, when PS1 games come to the Classics Catalog, they can be purchased separately and played without a PS Plus subscription. As for PS2 games, that’s more of a case-by-case basis, and that decision most likely lies with Capcom.

It would be great to see Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams available for purchase, because not everyone will want to subscribe to PlayStation Plus Premium just to play it.
