Avengers: Doomsday quietly 'confirms' how Kang is being written out of MCU

How will the story adapt to Doom?

Following Kang actor Jonathan Majors being charged with domestic violence and assault, the MCU received a switch-up which saw the villain replaced with an equally monstrous character.

That is how Doctor Doom entered into the Marvel Cinematic Universe when it was revealed that Robert Downey. Jr would be taking on the role back in 2024.

As a result, Marvel Studios shifted away from the story of Kang the Conqueror to Doctor Doom as the primary antagonist of the MCU’s sixth phase.

With Doctor Doom already making his movie debut in a recent release, fans are wondering how exactly Kang was written out of the MCU.

Luckily, a Q&A with Marvel insider Alex Perez earlier this year explained how Doom’s motivations differ from Kang’s and how this will tie in to both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.

“Doom wants to stop the incursions from happening and stop the multiverse from entirely collapsing on itself,” Perez explained.

“In a way, he’s technically a hero (in his eyes and the eyes of his followers), kind of like how Thanos saw himself as the hero in Infinity War. I think people will have a better time processing this movie if they stopped thinking of Doom as the ultimate villain meant to swap out Kang at the last minute, and more as the antagonist who thinks he is the hero.”

However, Perez also took the time to share how losing some elements of the Kang Dynasty arc is disappointing.

“Honestly, most of the stuff is still there, but I would have loved to see how Kang and Doctor Strange would have interacted, and how Kang would have made fun of Strange for essentially messing around with time in such a 'primitive way'.”

It is a shame that we will be losing some of these scenes but with Doom set to be Kang’s “replacement”, maybe Marvel will find a way to incorporate these scenes albeit with a different character with different motivations.

We will soon find out when Avengers: Doomsday hits cinemas on 18 December 2026.
