It seems ridiculous to think we were almost denied a chance to see what the upcoming Batman Beyond would look like, but its chances of survival have been sketchy for quite some time.

When the big DC shake up took place, many would-be projects got axed in favour of enforcing a new vision, which left fans worried about the Batman Beyond film’s development. Fortunately, we learnt that it was still in development.

Unfortunately, that development seems to be on indefinite hold right now, which does somewhat sour how excited we are to see what could have been if Patrick Harpin and PD Yuhki Demers, the designer for Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, were in charge.

Speaking of animated Batman, who can forget how amazing Batman: The Animated series was (and still is)

Needless to say, Batman fans are distraught at the prospect of never seeing this stunning rendition brought to life. Aside from simply sharing gifs to convey the feelings they can’t easily put into words, others begged James Gunn to reconsider; “Please, James Gunn, we need this,” said one fan.

Even though this project is still stuck in limbo, Demers remains hopeful that, by sharing these concept images, the project will finally be greenlit. “Before we pitched, they warned us ‘There is absolutely no way we can do a Beyond movie’, but they loved our enthusiasm."

Demers continued, "We pitched the outline for the entire film, and what started as a 'never' turned into a 'maybe.' In the time since, we've been pitching our way up the company hoping to get to James Gunn. But for now, here's a taste of what we've been cooking.”

Judging by the responses to the tweet, the audience is there for an animated version of Batman Beyond. However, it’s out of Demers’ hands whether that happens; maybe Gunn will see sense, but then again, maybe he won’t.

All we know is we can’t bear the thought of getting this first look at greatness, only for it to never become a film we watch.
