Surprise free Batman game launches, adapts fan-favourite TV show

It’s not everyday that we’re surprised with a new Batman game, let alone one that’s free.

That’s precisely what’s happened though, with Batman: Caped Crusader - Chronicles having launched on Amazon Luna, formerly Prime Gaming.

Amazon Luna is Amazon’s free gaming service included within the price of all standard Prime memberships.

Typically, Amazon Luna only offers PC titles but what’s wonderful about Batman: Caped Crusader - Chronicles is that it doesn’t require a PC, console, or controller; it can be enjoyed directly from the Prime app with Fire TV in the US and UK or on compatible smartphones.

The game was launched to celebrate the arrival of Batman: Caped Crusader’s second season, following on from the series’ acclaimed initial outing in 2024.

The well-received animated series offers a 1940s take on the classic Batman story, with Season 2 currently boasting a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Step into the shoes of a GCPD investigator in Batman: Caped Crusader - Chronicles

As for the surprise free game Batman: Caped Crusader - Chronicles, it loosely adapts the series, allowing fans to step into the shoes of a GCPD investigator.

You’ll team up with Batman and Detective Montoya to solve a number of perplexing cases.

“Team up with up to three friends to investigate 11 episodic cases, uncover clues through unique detective-themed minigames, and bring notorious villains like Scarecrow, Babyface, and The Joker to justice,” teased a press release.

Batman: Caped Crusader’s cast reprise their roles with Hamish Linklater as Batman, Michelle C. Bonilla as Detective Montoya, and the newly announced Matthew Needham as The Joker.

If you don’t have a Fire TV, you can also enjoy Batman: Caped Crusader - Chronicles via other compatible devices like smartphones or laptops.

You should expect the same quality of animation for portions of the game. Players are able to select between Story Mode or Quickplay with the latter allowing you to choose to replay your favourite missions.

When playing on a TV, your smartphone will act as your controller. Players can speak into their phone during interviews, trying their best to get suspects to open up.

You’ll also need to piece together destroyed evidence, search crime scenes for clues, decode witness statements, diffuse bombs, and more.

It’s definitely one for puzzle fans. You can take a look at what the game has to offer below.

Fans were, unsurprisingly, pretty hyped by the unexpected reveal.

“Huh, actually looks pretty fun,” said one trailer viewer. “Woohoo! Looks great. Can’t wait to play this after work,” added another.

Someone simply declared: “Masterpiece.”

As for Season 2 of Batman: Caped Crusader, it’s out now on Prime Video and consists of 10 episodes with all episodes having dropped in one go.

The series is yet to be renewed for a third season with that likely relying on viewership numbers for the newly released Season 2 so if you care about the show’s future, you better get watching.
