Red Dead Redemption 2 gets hefty 128GB graphics overhaul you can download free

An absolute stunner

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a staggeringly pretty game. I'm still not sure what black magics Rockstar Games invoked to get such a game running on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, but I'm glad they did.

Whether you're riding out into the sunset or hanging out at camp, Red Dead Redemption 2 is drop-dead gorgeous, with one of the best open worlds in any video game ever.

Take a look at some of the best Red Dead Redemption 2 wins and fails below!

It may sound sacrilegious to even suggest it, then, but it's possible to make the Rockstar classic look even better.

A massive new texture pack for Red Dead Redemption 2 weighing in at an eye-watering 128GB completely overhauls and upscales damn-near every asset in the game, from food and gravestones to trains and trinkets.

It's a truly mighty mod that makes smart use of AI to upscale everything while ensuring nothing looks horribly out of place. In other words, this mod is designed to make sure everything looks as Rockstar originally intended... just sharper.

With GTA VI the clear focus at Rockstar right now, mods like this will doubtless continue to keep Red Dead Redemption 2 alive and kicking. At least until Red Dead Redemption 3 comes along, whenever that may be.

"If it's really, really great, it will keep going," Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick said of the Red Dead franchise a few years back, giving fans hope that a third entry is a matter of when, and not if.

"I don't know if you saw it, I just saw the new Bond film, that was great. You would like every franchise to be James Bond. There are precious few entertainment franchises of any sort that fall into that category, but they do exist. And I think GTA is one of them, I think Red Dead is one of them, NBA is obviously one of them because the game will continue to exist.”

"It also requires you to be thoughtful and willing to rest the titles, so you have a sense of, 'wow, this is a rare event,'" Zelnick explained. "I've always said that annualizing non-sports titles runs the risk of burning out the intellectual property, even if it's good. So we take the time to make something we think is incredibly phenomenal, and we also rest titles intentionally so that there's pent-up demand for that title, so it's a special event."
