Who tuned into Summer Game Fest? Geoff Keighley took to the stage last night in Los Angeles to present what’s coming up in the games industry across the next few months and years. Of course, this is only a small sample of what’s on the way, but the night included some fun reveals.

Mortal Kombat 1 debuted a gruesome first-look gameplay trailer which, yes, is just as bloody as the reveal trailer. We also finally have a release date for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 after what feels like an eternity of waiting. There was a fun new trailer for Twisted Metal featuring Sweet Tooth, plus Lies of P was confirmed to have a free playable demo which is out now. Ubisoft surprised us with a new Prince of Persia game - and it’s not the struggling The Sands of Time remake which has been stuck in development for quite some time. The night ended with the first gameplay trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth but it wasn’t the gameplay that ended up being the talking point of the night. It was a simple phrase that popped up right at the end of the trailer: two discs.

Take a look at the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth trailer below.

That’s right. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is set to be so chonky that it’s coming on two discs - and clearly Square Enix wants you to know that. It’s not uncommon for games to come on two discs. I know for certain that The Last of Us Part II did. I’m sure you too will have similar examples in your collection. It does signify that we’re in for an epic and long adventure.

Assumedly, you’d think that one disc would be the installation disc, while the other would be the one you use to play. Fans have a different theory though. Some are wondering if one disc will contain Zack’s story while the other contains Cloud’s. That would be a bold move by Square Enix. It feels a little bit like wishful thinking but at the same time, the fuss surrounding the two discs wording is strange. No other game has particularly advertised that fact, even when it’s been the case.

We don’t yet have a release date but Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is due to release in early 2024 so we don’t have too much longer to wait.
