Final Fantasy fans are getting an unexpected new game to play this year, for better or worse…
We thought the most exciting Final Fantasy news we’d get this year was Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth coming to the Nintendo Switch 2, running at a crisp 20-30fps. I’m joking of course, it didn’t look that bad but I don’t think anyone’s expecting exceptional performance from the upcoming port.
Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth on Switch is still the most exciting news we’ve had so far this year but Final Fantasy fans should still turn their attention to this new game announcement just for the hell of it.
The RPG series we all know and love is being converted into a tabletop board game, allowing you to relive and re-experience the magic in your living room…which I suppose you’d be doing anyway with your TV but you get what I mean.
Advert
Square Enix has partnered with KessCo to make this special collaboration happen and while I’m not in the market for video game board game adaptations I will say this one looks quite lovely.

The board game will adapt the first three games into tabletop format, so Final Fantasy I, Final Fantasy II, and Final Fantasy III, though we’re sure it’ll get round to the other games in due time.

Players will become the usual protagonists as they set off around the board for picking fights, levelling up and collecting treasures.
As far as video games go Final Fantasy is a pretty straightforward series to adapt for a board game as it’s all turn-based, at least the classic games were.
Speaking on the new collaboration at Toy Fair Alex Kessler, CEO of KessCo, said: “We’re excited to partner with Square Enix and continue that momentum with our own faithful adaptation that honors what fans love most about the Pixel Remaster Era while delivering something fun, accessible, and collectible for the tabletop community.”
No exact release date has been mentioned yet but it’ll be launching later this year.
PlayStation’s State of Play
If you thought the board game was something you might have high hopes for PlayStation’s newly announced State of Play broadcast.
While it’s not an exclusive in the traditional sense the Final Fantasy VII remakes have been timed-exclusives for Sony’s platform, and with this State of Play might come an announcement for the third instalment in the remake trilogy.
No Final Fantasy projects are rumoured for the event but that doesn’t mean the publisher won’t surprise us…
