PlayStation confirms next free PS Plus game for August 2026

PlayStation Plus is about to welcome one of the most-popular multiplayer titles of recent years.

Later today PlayStation will officially announce the PlayStation Plus Extra line-up for August 2026. We don’t know the total number of games joining the service, we now know at least one of them.

As a surprise treat it’s been confirmed that Helldivers 2 will now be included with your membership, to celebrate the new Devoid of Liberty update.

PlayStation’s official social media channels shared the news, saying the game will be available later today. The Devoid of Liberty update is already available.

What is Helldivers 2 and why should you care that it’s on PlayStation Plus?

Helldivers 2 is a humorous sci-fi multiplayer game inspired by Starship Troopers. You and millions of other helldivers are tasked with restoring democracy to the universe, all in the name of liberty.

Throughout the galaxy several wars are being waged between humanity and extra-terrestrial threats, such as the Terminids, Automatons and Illuminate.

Luckily, Super Earth has a near-endless supply of brave soldiers ready to blast-off into orbit and bring peace to the worlds beyond.

It’s a parody of macho-military media complete with its own propaganda network. It also mocks large-scale corporations and how they only see humans as numbers rather than people, which is especially apt nowadays with the mass layoffs gripping the industry. The game is also published by Sony Interactive Entertainment, and we’re sure the irony isn’t lost on anyone there…

Back to the game itself though. With a large-array of weapons, armour, and battle gear, you and your team must complete a series of missions to successfully liberate a planet, but with rapidly changing lore and new developments every month the state of the galaxy is constantly shifting.

It’s good fun, and players have thoroughly enjoyed the larping as the game’s events are often treated as real-life situations. Don’t ask a helldiver what happened on Malevelon Creek…

The game is a great fit for PlayStation Plus as it’s perfect for dropping in and out at your leisure. It’s also best played with friends so this allows your whole group to get involved provided you all have active PlayStation Plus subscriptions.

The only downside is there’s a lot of content to digest after so many free updates, so new players might feel a bit lost or pressured to catch up. With adjustable difficulty settings however it shouldn’t be too much of a problem.

To sweeten the deal, there have also been several collaborations with other sci-fi media, such as Halo 3: ODST weapons and armour becoming available when the game landed on Xbox platforms.

Helldivers 2 is also about to partner with the legendary Warhammer 40k universe, which should be fun.

Honestly there’s no better time to jump in, so it’s nice to see the game becoming available for more players through PlayStation Plus Extra. Now we just need to see what other games join the service later today…
