Is Final Fantasy VII the best game in the series to date? Very possibly, and there are certainly a lot of people out there who will tell you it is, even if there are as many that might argue the case for VI or IX just as enthusiastically.
As such, it was little surprise that the game got picked up for the remake treatment back in 2020, when Square Enix released the first part in a trilogy of games that rebuild the original from top to bottom for modern audiences.
That first release was followed up by the well-received Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth in 2024, with the question quickly turning to when players could see out the journey with the final part of the trilogy.
Square Enix has been pretty tight lipped about its plans so far, and in all fairness, it really hasn't been that long by comparison to the gap between the releases of the first two games.

That could all be about to change, however, as new evidence on YouTube of all places suggests we could be about to get a pretty big announcement.
Final Fantasy Trailer Playlist Has An Unlisted Video

Over on Reddit, one user shared their discovery that the playlist of Final Fantasy trailers on Square Enix's YouTube channel has two unlisted videos, as well as the fact that it had been updated earlier that day (10 December).
It has since been pointed out that one of the videos in question is almost certainly the Crisis Core Reunion trailer from a few years back, but that leaves one big question mark in the playlist that fans are sure is the trailer for the end of the trilogy.
"One of them is definitely going to be VII Remake Part 3 for sure. Even though IX is my favourite, I'm not getting my hopes up again regarding a remake. It's likely going to be XIV related. I wouldn't get your hopes up for anything more," one comment read.
Plenty of others shared their agreement, and it's difficult to see beyond that being the most likely avenue for Square Enix to be leading us down.
The obvious connection to be made here is that The Game Awards is scheduled to go ahead on 11 December, with many of the biggest developers and publishers expected to show off their new games there, in a post-E3 world.
With the above in mind, it seems pretty likely that part three of the Final Fantasy VII Remake is amongst them.
