Final Fantasy 7 Remake now has a gorgeous fan-made remaster, but you’ll need to set aside some serious hard drive space to accommodate it.
Released over five years ago, Final Fantasy 7 Remake has proven to be a hit with fans, massively expanding upon the story and setting of the original game.
While we’re still waiting for the third part to be revealed, this new fan-made remaster from modder ‘f80h’ has made the first game in the trilogy look absolutely gorgeous.
The mod, titled HD 4K 8K texture collection, does exactly as it says on the tin. Nearly every texture in Final Fantasy 7 Remake has been replaced by 4K and 8K textures to enhance the detail on character models and the environment.

As f80h explains in the mod description, colour and normal textures have been upscaled by twice the resolution, or sometimes four times the resolution for some surfaces.
In the case of environmental textures, bricks and walls have been replaced with ambientCG real-time 3D scans to make them look more realistic. f80h explains that all logos, text, graffiti, and posters that have been upscaled are the most noticeable improvements, benefitting from the process most of all.
The same can be said for character models, with clothing textures seeing major improvements. Eyes and irises have been upscaled and enhanced, as well as hair textures which have also been re-generated to fit with the new textures.
f80h has also shared some screenshots in the mod, which are worth a look at if you want to see what the game looks like now with these enhancements installed.

The total file size of the mod reaches a whopping 169GB with all the components installed, but due to download size limitations on NexusMods, each part has been divided into separate downloads.
Not only does this make it a bit more convenient for downloading, but it also means some parts of the mod remain optional for those who can’t spare the storage space for it.
Obviously, with this mod installed, you might have to adjust your expectations in terms of performance. f80h claims that there is “no real impact at all” on performance if you have enough VRAM.
They recommend 16GB of VRAM and installing the game on a NVMe SSD. 16GB is obviously a bit more than the average PC gamer uses, so be sure to check your system specs and proceed at your own risk if you don’t meet the requirements.
