PlayStation dropping major announcement in response to PS Plus Price increase, says insider

This announcement better be good if it's to make up for charging us more...

According to an insider, PlayStation is planning on delivering a pretty major announcement following on from the disastrous reveal that PS Plus prices will increase. We doubt we’re alone in saying this, but the announcement better be something earth-shatteringly good, otherwise there’s no reason for such a big price jump.

So, what is the major announcement? No one knows. Jeff Grubb posted on Twitter “I've heard a State of Play is coming, and this feels like a lead-in for that” in response to gamers complaining about the price hike. The problem is, what that “State of Play” means feels a little too obscure for anyone to feel better about having to fork out an extra £20 for a service that leaves a lot to be desired.

Check out Sea of Stars because it's a free PS Plus game right now!

The moment PlayStation subtly tried to hide the price increase behind the news of September’s PS Plus games, many users started cancelling their subscriptions in a form of protest that we really hope PlayStation will recognise and listen to. After all, when Xbox Pass tried something similar, enough people rioted against the decision that Microsoft quickly rolled it back while trying to pretend it never even happened. But we remember and we never forgive.

Allow one Redditor to explain the absurdity of it all. “It’s mostly due to the delivery of higher-quality games for “free”. Just look at this month’s offerings: Saints Row (61 Metascore, 2.8 user score on Metacritic (PS5)), Generation Zero (45 Metascore, 5.9 user score (PS4)) and a DLC (I presume) for an online greedy game. I think a 33.3% price increase (USA prices) is very reasonable,” said Technocraftor. It’s important to point out, if you hadn’t gathered already, that this is a sarcastic comment. Look at those game scores – no one would see those and be like “yeah, let’s pay more!”

Putting general anger aside, others are speculating that this “grand reveal” is going to be nothing more than Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 related content. Which, let’s be honest, isn’t going to cut it. Although the new Spidey game has helped reignite the dumb console war that keeps coming back like a bad smell, it still won’t be a good enough game to warrant price hikes that’ll price people out of gaming.

Are we about to learn of something magical and new at PlayStation, or are we about to be hit with “ ineffective damage control”? I know which one I’m siding with…
