Update 17/06/26 at 14:15: I just received a very interesting email from Sony PlayStation promoting God of War Laufey. Not long after this article was published, emails sent to the public said that the game is "coming soon". Could the shadow-drop be real? Only time will tell, but we'll keep you posted.

Original article: God of War fans are speculating that the upcoming God of War Laufey could be shadow-dropped on PlayStation 5 any day now.
God of War Laufey was revealed with a gorgeous gameplay presentation during the latest State of Play, and in it, you play as Kratos’s second deceased wife, Faye, with her being pulled into an afterlife realm known as the Everywhen. This afterlife features a plethora of gods, mythical creatures and monsters for a variety of pantheons.

As you might expect from a developer like Santa Monica Studios, the visuals for God of War Laufey looked stunning, and its high-octane combat, somewhat reminiscent of Devil May Cry, looked super fun. All in all, for a first reveal, God of War Laufey already looked very polished from top to bottom. Perhaps a level of polish that you might expect from a game close to release, not one that could be years away.
Take, for example, the God of War trilogy remakes that were announced earlier this year. When those remakes were announced, Sony and Santa Monica Studios made it very clear that these remakes were in the very early stages of development, and it will be a long way off before we’re treated to some gameplay, let alone a release window. No such statements were said during the God of War Laufey reveal, other than it being in development.
“I feel like they're about to shadow drop God of War Laufey. I'm kinda scared and hyped,” said JJettro on Twitter. “It has gotten way more promo than Marvel’s Wolverine, who has its release date already confirmed and is only three months away,” added HighKingOf7Seas.
Interestingly, it’s believed that the development of God of War Laufey began around 2019, so it’s reasonable to assume that any game that began its development seven years ago might be close to release. Well, unless that game is called The Elder Scrolls VI, of course.

One of the reasons why fans believe that Sony could be planning on dropping God of War Laufey anytime now is that across almost all of the PlayStation social media accounts, the banners have been changed to the upcoming Santa Monica Studios title.
However, Marvel’s Wolverine, a huge AAA first-party exclusive that we know is releasing this September, is not currently being advertised to that extent on the official PlayStation social media accounts.
“God of War Laufey ‘isn’t years away’, after six years of development at Sony Santa Monica,” said Redditor HatingGeoffry, soon after the game was officially revealed.
“Coming out with a 20-minute gameplay showcase when the game doesn't even have an official release date yet is definitely a strange decision. That usually only happens when a game is only a couple of months away,” replied Fickle_Grocery_3654.
Obviously, if God of War Laufey is shadow-dropped in the next couple of weeks, then that will change everything we know right now.
As it stands, we know that in terms of PlayStation 5 console exclusives this year, Marvel’s Wolverine (15 September), Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls (6 August), and Phantom Blade Zero (29 October) are all set to arrive before God of War Laufey. Then, in 2027, we have Naughty Dog’s Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
Of course, there’s every chance that Sony is simply pushing God of War Laufey across social media right now to keep the game in our minds, but it’s certainly interesting that it's taken priority over Marvel’s Wolverine, which is only a few months away.
As always, we will keep you posted if we hear of any further developments related to the release of God of War Laufey, which is set to launch on PlayStation 5.
