God of War fans are looking forward to the upcoming trilogy remakes, but many are in agreement that some features need to remain untouched by the developers.
Developed by Santa Monica Studio, the God of War franchise became one of PlayStation’s most important franchises when it first arrived in 2005 on the PS2. Over two decades later, that remains the same, with fans now eagerly awaiting the arrival of what potentially could be three games on the horizon.
However, the God of War that was released in 2005 is quite different to the soft reboot that arrived in 2018 on PlayStation 4, followed up by its 2022 sequel, God of War Ragnarök.
Sure, the God of War games today still have an angry, god-slaying Kratos, and it has plenty of blood and guts. Albeit this is more of a mellow Kratos, after he settled down with his new wife and son, Faye and Atreus, in the frosty lands of Scandinavia.

Perhaps the biggest difference to the original God of War games back in the day, compared to these days, is the camera perspective. The camera in 2005 was in third-person, but it was somewhat fixed with little player control, and would change automatically depending on the scene.
Whereas God of War from 2018 took more of a cinematic approach by adopting an over-the-shoulder, third-person camera that also gave players free movement. A camera angle made famous in the original Resident Evil 4. God of War post-2018 is also far less QTE-heavy.

“Don't undo his work. Improve upon it only,” said Impressive_East.
“Please don't change the music, gameplay, camera, QTEs, minigames, and don't censor anything,” added Vappy3.
“I don’t want over-the-shoulder gameplay, I want the classic hack and slash beat 'em up style,” requested Ragtagcloud56.
“Honestly. I hope they make the OG trilogy more cohesive and emotionally relevant to Kratos’ redemption arc in the Norse saga,” explained VladDHell, wanting a bridge between the originals and post-2018. “I want the same games I grew up with, but with more depth and complexity than they originally had.”

At this time, no, they don’t. The God of War trilogy remakes were announced in February 2026, but it was made very clear during the reveal that they are in the very early stages of production, and it’s going to be a while until we see some of the game in action.
All we know for sure is that Terrance C. Carson, the original Kratos, will return in the remakes, rather than Christopher Judge, who is the voice of Kratos from 2018 to 2022.
However, we do have another game in the series on the way, and that’s God of War Laufey, announced during State of Play in April 2026. It will star Kratos' wife, Faye, with its events beginning at the very start of the 2018 game.
Of course, as soon as we get an update on the release date for the God of War trilogy remakes, we’ll let you know right away.
