The highly anticipated God of War remakes could have a major spanner thrown in the works that sets it apart from the PS2 originals, all thanks to Sony’s recent actions.
Ever since Santa Monica Studio released the first game in its God of War series on the PlayStation 2 in 2005, the angry, god-slaying exploits of Kratos have been one of the most popular video game properties on the Sony brand.
Fans loved its Devil May Cry-esque, high-octane action, slaying all those who dared stand in the way of Kratos’ pursuit of vengeance to enact revenge against the god of Olympus for cruelly tricking the Spartan into killing his wife and daughter.

Done with life under the cloud of Olympus, Kratos would eventually move to Midgard, where he would find a new wife, Faye and together, they created their son, Atreus. No doubt, Kratos had intended to live somewhat of a quiet life, that was, until trouble literally came knocking at his door.

With the arrival of a new location and family, God of War in 2018 had a soft reboot. Sure, it still had buckets of gore and over-the-top action, but Santa Monica Studios created something more of a cinematic experience, with an over-the-shoulder camera perspective, not dissimilar to what we see in Resident Evil 4 and Dead Space.
Despite the success of God of War (2018) and its 2022 sequel, God of War Ragnarök, fans still have a thirst for Kratos in the good old Olympus days, and that's exactly what fans will be getting, after remakes of the original God of War trilogy were announced in February this year.
However, following the announcement by Sony that PlayStation is ditching physical games and going all digital by 2028, it has raised some concerns among gamers.
“After seeing the news today, I really hope that the remakes of the original trilogy come out before 2028,” exclaimed Redditor mr_Conquest_.

This Reddit user raises a very valid point, because when the God of War remakes were announced, it was made clear that they’re in very early development and we’re going to have to be patient to see them in action, let alone playing them on PlayStation 5.
What’s more, due to being in very early production, there is no release date or even a predicted launch window for the God of War remakes. Who knows, if we’re lucky, perhaps they could arrive in late 2027, but don’t hold your breath.
“I know that there will be people who might not really care all that much for this change, but for me, it's really important to own the game's disc,” mr_Conquest_ continued. “I just hope that the remakes come out before 2028, so that I can at least own them on disc.”
“Not a chance, dude, considering God of War Laufey is early 2027,” declared muneeb93500.
“Not even a teaser got released… Not possible in the near future at all,” added Sweet_Score.
“They said it's in early development stages. I highly doubt they will have the full trilogy remade by 2028. It will take at least until 2030,” said Neat_Ad_3043. If that were to happen, and it might, the God of War remake trilogy will most likely be a PlayStation 6 exclusive.
Hopefully, we’ll learn more about when the God of War remakes will grace us with its presence either late this year or sometime in 2027. We’ll keep you posted when that information drops.
