Santa Monica Studio has finally surfaced with several exciting God of War announcements. In fact, I'm overstimulated right now.
First of all, God of War: Sons of Sparta is available on PS5 today. Yes, today.
To round off the franchise's 20th anniversary year, Santa Monica has shadowdropped a brand new God of War game that appears to be a pixel art metroidvania chronicling Kratos' spartan days.
There are two versions of the surprise game available. The standard Edition will set you back $29.99 USD / €29.99 / £24.99, while the digital deluxe edition costs $39.99 USD / €39.99 / £32.99.

Wondering what the latter includes? You'll nab some extra weapons, gear, and several PSN avatars, plus a digital artbook and soundtrack.
The game has been made alongside Mega Cat Studios.
Over on the PlayStation Blog, Santa Monica opened up about the surprise new release: "God of War: Sons of Sparta is a 2D action platformer with a canon story set in Kratos’ youth during his harsh training at the Agoge alongside his brother Deimos."
It continued, "From the writing team at Santa Monica Studio that brought you God of War (2018) and God of War Ragnarök, Sons of Sparta is a tale of duty, honor, and brotherhood featuring TC Carson who reprises his role the first time in over a decade as the adult version of Kratos, our story’s narrator!
"God of War’s kinetic combat has found a home in a brand-new genre. Kratos will learn deadly skills using his spear and shield, as well as harness powerful divine artifacts known as the Gifts of Olympus to take on a wide array of foes.
"Sons of Sparta features the return of iconic classics recreated in 2D with stunning hand-drawn pixel animation, as well as a host of new creatures to the franchise inspired by the rich, untapped facets of Greek mythology brought to life by the retro experts at Mega Cat Studios."
That's not all that original Kratos TC Carson is returning for.
The Entire Greek Trilogy Is Receiving The Remake Treatment
Carson also stopped by to confirm that remakes of the original three games are in the works.
Yes, God of War's original trilogy is getting the full-on remake treatment but it was stressed that those titles are early in development.
"This project is still very early in development, so we ask for your patience as it will be a while before anything else can be shared. When we can come back with an update, we aim to make it a big one," the team said.
That does mean we're probably not going to receive a game that carries on from the Norse Saga for years and years, but I'm not about to look a gift horse in the mouth.
