New Zelda game quietly confirms extra surprise for fans

Fans rejoice as the ESRB accidentally confirms that Echoes of Wisdom has a link to a past Zelda game.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is set to be the first Legend of Zelda title that features none other than Zelda herself as the primary playable character, as long as you ignore the fact that she was the main character in one of those terrible Philips CD-i games.

The plot of Echoes of Wisdom follows Zelda as she sets out to save Link for a change, which of course caused several internet basement dwellers to immediately label the game as "woke" following its announcement last month.

Female-adverse gamers need not fear any further however, as (thanks to a cheeky little leak from the Entertainment Software Rating Board) it has been confirmed that Link is actually a playable character in the Link's Awakening-inspired spin-off.

As detailed in the ESRB's rating summary for Echoes of Wisdom, "As Link, players use a sword and arrows to defeat enemies; Zelda can use a magic wand to summon creatures (e.g., wind-up knights, pig soldiers, slime) for battle."

This isn't the first time the ESRB have accidently leaked information about an upcoming title, and it isn't even the first time they've leaked information about a Nintendo game featuring both Zelda and Link - although it certainly isn't anywhere near as bad as the time they leaked playable footage from Super Smash Bros. for the Nintendo 3DS.

Nintendo are probably a bit less upset about it this time around though, as the news that everyone's favourite Phrygian capped Hylian will be playable in Echoes of Wisdom was met with a positive reception online.

The game is set to release on the 26th of September at the end of this year, so expect to see some footage of Link and Zelda wombo-combo-ing some monsters well before then - especially now that Nintendo know that the cat is out of the bag.

Of course the ESRB's rating summary of the the game isn't supposed to be exhaustive, so it's possible even more playable characters could be announced in the future. There's still hope, Tingle stans.
