Hogwarts Legacy rival RPG is a modern take on PS2 Harry Potter

Back To Hogwarts Day has come and gone and, unfortunately, it didn’t bring with it the reveal of a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy.

Despite not having been announced, a sequel is certainly what Avalanche Studios is working on, with Warner Bros. Games’ lead previously teasing the return of several major gaming franchises across 2027 and 2028.

In the meantime though, we’ll have to source our wizarding gaming fix elsewhere, but that’s where Hemlotrion: Broken Mirror comes into play.

This single-player fantasy title is in development for PC - and while it certainly ticks the box of making up for the lack of Hogwarts Legacy 2, it’s also massively reminding us of Wizarding World hits of yesteryear.

If the very thought of the PlayStation 2’s Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets warms your heart with nostalgia, then Hemlotrion: Broken Mirror is the game for you.

Developed by Frogstorm, the game clearly takes inspiration from those classic Harry Potter games as well as the franchise more widely.

It’s set at the wizarding school of Hemlotrion, a place described as “full of secrets and mysteries”.

You’ll step into the shoes of second-year student Simon Page.

“A new school year begins, and exciting adventures await you: learning spells, exploring the mysterious corners of the castle, uncovering ancient secrets, and meeting old friends as well as new rivals,” reads the synopsis.

Throughout the game, you’ll partake in all of the classic wizarding fare from learning new spells, to battling magical creatures, exploring hidden areas of the castle, and discovering dark secrets.

Players will be able to find ancient artifacts and useful items, solve puzzles and riddles that stand in your way, as well as befriend students, teachers, and magical creatures - except perhaps those that wish you harm.

You’ll attend lessons where you can unlock and perfect skills; these lessons involve plenty of practical training.

You might need to fight goblins or golems, for example. Eventually, players will be able to duel with their fellow classmates.

Developers have also teased other minigames where you can test your skills, but we don’t yet know precisely what those are.

If you’re wondering whether the game features a villain as chilling as Voldemort, well, developers had this to say: “A detective adventure full of riddles and mysticism awaits you. A dark threat is hidden within the walls of the school. Your task is to stop the one committing irreversible evil before it is too late. Every discovery brings you closer to the truth, but makes the journey more difficult and presents new challenges.”

There’s no launch date for Hemlotrion: Broken Mirror just yet, but you can wishlist the game on Steam.

As soon as you watch the trailer, you’ll understand our comparison to the early PlayStation era of Harry Potter games - even if Hemlotrion: Broken Mirror isn’t likely to deliver us something as iconic as polygonal Hagrid.

You have to wonder though whether Hemlotrion: Broken Mirror is too similar to the Wizarding World.

The protagonist, setting, and even music all echo JK Rowling’s famous creation. It’ll be interesting to see what happens if Warner Bros. does catch wind of the project.

Diehard fans don’t seem to care even if the developers’ inspiration is clear to see.

“This is literally just off-brand Harry Potter. I approve,” wrote Twitter/X user Alten2475.

“PS2 Chamber of Secrets vibes wow,” added purpvelli.

We sense that the developers knew exactly what they were doing with this one.
