Halo 2 free 16-player campaign is what the cancelled remake could have been

Halo 2 is often regarded as one of the best Xbox games ever made, even despite its controversial cliffhanger ending.

While I’ve always preferred Halo 3, I’ll happily admit it’s a damn fine game, which is why I’m pleased to see it take on new life through Project Gravemind.

For those unaware, Project Gravemind is a new, unofficial launcher for the game separate from Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

It’s completely free and lets you play Halo 2 in ways you’d never have imagined back in 2004.

The version supports up to 16 players in its co-op campaign, and 24 players in its multiplayer modes, with matchmaking and dedicated servers included.

That’s not a typo either. You can explore Delta Halo or tear through High Charity as a 16-player group. It’s simply unreal.

Project Gravemind is still a work-in-progress, but an open beta is available now, so you can dive in and try it for yourself if you’d like to. Unlike other launchers like Project Reclaimer, all you need for this one is Halo: The Master Chief Collection. It’ll automatically use the copy of Halo 2 found in the collection.

Feedback has been great so far, and it’ll only get better as it develops. We’ve already seen the ceiling for modifications such as this, like 64-player online for Halo 3.

Halo 2 remake would have been the boldest game from Halo Studios so far, had it released

It’s old news by this point, but Halo Studios will no longer be the developer of future Halo games. That responsibility now falls to Activision Blizzard.

What a shame too. Halo: Campaign Evolved was actually solid, and its Legendary ending was already teasing a remake of Halo 2.

It could have been truly exceptional. Halo 2’s success was practically a miracle given how much crunch was involved with its development.

So many missions and ideas had to be cut from the final release, and while some were re-explored for Halo 3, the majority of it was left behind.

Halo Studios’ remake of the game could have been more than just a graphical enhancement. It could have restored those missions to their former glory and perfectly led into a Halo 3 remake next.

We already saw a few of these ideas at work during Halo: Campaign Evolved. Flood Tank forms, for instance, weren’t in the original game, but were added in for the remake. Additionally, while the prequel missions were pretty disappointing, they did feel like a test for something more.

Unfortunately, we’ll never know what Halo Studios envisioned for the Halo 2 remake, but if the latest fan creations are anything to go off it’s one of the biggest missed opportunities in gaming history.
