The lack of local split-screen in Halo: Campaign Evolved has finally been addressed, thanks to a new mod which restores the ability to play side-by-side with a friend on PC.
Although Halo fans seem to be enjoying some of the changes made in Halo: Campaign Evolved, one of the biggest criticisms was leveraged towards the lack of a split-screen co-op mode on PC.
Split-screen is still present on console versions such as Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 (though you need to jump through a few hoops in order to play it), this feature is seemingly missing from the PC version.
PC modders have now uncovered a way to play the game with split-screen mode, releasing a mod within the first 24 hours of its release addressing the situation.

According to modder JPurd123, the PC version of Halo: Campaign Evolved never fully removed the split-screen functionality from the console version.
The mode is actually still enabled in the game's configuration files, with support for split-screen HUD layouts, UI, and VFX variants also still in the files on PC.
What this essentially means is that the support for local split-screen is there, but the PC version has an additional layer which disables it for players to access.

Halo's splitscreen mode is a key feature of the series, so it's weird that it's not in the PC version
As for the reason why is anyone's guess, but it might have something to do with the fact that split-screen doesn't work with two keyboard and mouse setups. At least one player must be using a controller.
It may also be that Halo Studios has assumed most players are playing at their desk with a keyboard and mouse (a rather outdated assumption in 2026, if you ask us), and so hasn't felt it necessary to include the extra work to enable split-screen on a native level.
Before you get too excited, bear in mind that this mod has only been tested using the Steam version of Halo: Campaign Evolved. It hasn't been tested with the Xbox app version, which is packaged differently from the Steam version. JPurd123 also notes that it doesn't work with pirated copies of the game.
Considering how quickly a mod like this was able to be uploaded, it seems fair enough that Halo Studios could release a patch addressing this issue in the future.
The original Halo: Combat Evolved was a very popular title to play on the classic Xbox due to the local multiplayer features it had, so it's a shame to see something like this disregarded for just one platform.
In our Halo: Campaign Evolved review, our own Sam Cawley said that "If this is the standard going forward, Halo might well and truly be back, and I’m already hungry for a remake of Halo 2 next. The main game was exceptional, and the Remix mode adds so much replay value for both single-player and multiplayer playthroughs."
