The best Project Zomboid mods range from simple texture and model swaps, to new content like weapons, items, and resources, as well as tweaks to the game behaviour.
Project Zomboid mods are available via Nexus Mods or the Steam Workshop which you can access from the game itself, and are pretty easy to install once you know how.
Most of the time, they’ll go directly into your game folder, with specific instructions available on each mod page for how to do that exactly.
The best Project Zomboid mods you can download now
We’ll go over eight of the best mods for Project Zomboid which you can install, each one providing you with new content to play with, or even brand new experiences which dramatically change the way the game is played.
1. Project Viewpoint
Easily the most ambitious mod we’ve seen for Project Zomboid so far, Project Viewpoint is a mod which completely changes the perspective of the game from an isometric survival game, to one that is played from first-person or third-person view.
As expected, this massively affects how you play the game, turning everything you see in the world into a 3D object with new collision and perspective details. It requires you to think about how you approach each situation differently, and provides a different level of immersion that makes it a fun alternative experience.

2. Bedford Falls
It’s a wonderful life. Or is it? This mod adds in a brand new town, Bedford Falls, complete with over 800 new buildings, different districts, alternative paths, and unique locations.
In the vanilla game, Bedford Falls is placed southeast of Muldraugh and directly south of West Point, which you can access from the main highway outside of the city. It’s also a lot bigger than either town, making a fun place to explore for stronger characters after a challenge.

3. Common Sense
There are a lot of items and everyday objects you can pick up in Project Zomboid, but some of them don’t behave in the way you’d expect. Common Sense fixes this by adding new behaviours and attributes to these items.
For example, crowbars can now pry open doors and windows, canned food can be opened with screwdrivers, and spears can be crafted with mops and brooms. There are a lot of other changes that the mod makes, but it’s all very immersive in how it’s presented to you.

4. Companion Dogs
Given that dogs are usually a must-have for any budding zombie apocalypse survivor, we’re surprised that the vanilla version of Project Zomboid doesn’t have this as a feature.
Nevertheless, Companion Dogs is one such mod that we’d recommend downloading due to the fact that it introduces new mechanics to these canine friends. You can feed it, grow your bond, and even use them to take care of zombies for you.

5. Antibodies
Antibodies overhauls the way the in-game health system works in Project Zomboid by introducing an antibodies curve which behaves similarly to real-life immune system responses. When infected, your character has a chance to successfully counteract the infection, giving them a gradual recovery over time.
This only works if you take care of the wounds by sustaining positive effects while reducing all negative effects. Along with this, your character can also develop more immunity to the infection as a result.

6. Project Seasons
Livens up the passage of time by introducing more varied seasons to the game. Although Project Zomboid already introduces diverse effects to the world depending on the season, this mod makes it even more varied.
Erosion now matches the season that you’re in, meaning some of the vanilla effects that can occur all year round will only now trigger when you’re in the right season. More varied terrain also spawns in depending on the season you’re playing with, so you should see different world effects based on the time of year.

7. Condition on Dash
Adds some new elements to the HUD when driving a vehicle, displaying engine condition, battery charge, and headlights on the dashboard for a more immersive and controlled driving experience.
It’s a small quality-of-life feature, but an important one if you use vehicles a lot in the game and want some additional information in using these vehicles.

8. Unlock viZion
This is more of a cheat mod, as it directly goes against the intended experience and makes the game a little easier, but for those who can’t get to grips with Project Zomboid’s vision mechanics, we’re including this as an alternative experience.
Unlock viZion changes things so that you can see the entire screen at once, with no fog of war limiting vision of zombies and other hazards. Now you have 360° vision, as well as no cone vision. It’s compatible with both singleplayer and multiplayer.
