A brand new mod for Stardew Valley dramatically changes the way we approach farming, particularly with planting crops.
For a game as old as Stardew Valley, which celebrated its 10th anniversary earlier this year, it's incredible that fans are still finding ways to alter the experience through modding.
Some of the best Stardew Valley mods are ones which tweak the gameplay to provide new ways of playing, refreshing the gameplay for a brand new playthrough. With farming being so central to the experience, it's no wonder a lot of mods seem to focus on this.
Crop Traits is the latest mod to do such a thing, adding over 120 gameplay-changing traits to both vanilla and modded crops. These traits will appear through random mutations and can be kept through seeds or spliced together into rare combinations.

You start by either reaching level 3 farming or discovering a trait via a crop mutation, which can occur when it first sprouts. On the following in-game day, Demetrius will send you a letter containing a helpful guidebook that covers everything you need to know about crop mutations.

Stardew Valley's crops will be incredibly unpredictable following the installation of this new mod
You can spot mutations by looking for a specific effect, which resembles a sparkle, that appears on crops with new mutations which haven't been harvested yet. You can also find these traits by pressing G on your keyboard, which marks them with an icon.
Although the traits are often unique, they sometimes have a chance to also inherit mutations from nearby crops of the same type. So there becomes a chance that an entire batch of certain fruit or vegetables end up with the same mutated traits. Additionally, you can also use the Seed Splicer, which you can craft at Farming Level 9, to mix these traits more reliably.
The Seed Mixer will also propagate your current traits by feeding it any hybrid crop, which will in turn give you seeds with the same traits. It's now craftable from Farming Level 3, which is down from the Level 9 requirement in the vanilla game.
The guidebook is very important for keeping track of these mutations, but should you ever lose it, you can pick up another one for free from Pierre's shop after it's been unlocked.
You can discover traits as you find them, at which point they'll be added to the guidebook, but the mod also features an option to "Show undiscovered traits", which you can enable from the mod settings should you want to check for yourself.
