Halo Studios has issued a correction following confusion surrounding the upcoming Halo: Campaign Evolved on PS5.
Earlier this week, Halo Studios published a Q&A post concerning common questions the community had surrounding the upcoming release of Halo: Campaign Evolved.
One particular detail that players picked out of the Q&A is that in order to play the game all players will need a Microsoft account and an Xbox gamertag to “ensure smooth cross-platform progression.”
However, another detail from the Q&A that picked up some controversy was the reveal that an active PlayStation Plus subscription would be needed to play the campaign in local co-op splitscreen.

“If you're playing split-screen on PlayStation 5, both accounts will need to have PlayStation Plus and be linked to a Microsoft account. Having these active PlayStation Plus subscriptions will also provide access to online co-op play,” read the Q&A post.

Following the spread of the news, Halo Studios has now issued a clarification that PS5 players will not need PlayStation Plus to play local co-op splitscreen.
“We incorrectly stated that PlayStation Plus is required for local co-op splitscreen play. Local splitscreen co-op requires a PlayStation account for each player but does not require a PlayStation Plus account,” posted the official Halo account on X (formerly Twitter).
This detail was also amended in the Q&A post this morning.

With Sony quietly killing off the PlayStation Network branding earlier this year, it’s likely that Halo Studios’ blunder was simply a result of this change which hasn’t seen an announced replacement yet.
Regardless, Halo: Campaign Evolved will still require you to have a Microsoft account and an Xbox gamertag if you’re playing on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5. If you’re on Steam, you only need a Microsoft account to play.
To get access to online co-op on console means you’ll still need a subscription to Xbox Game Pass Essential or PlayStation Plus Essential, or any tier above those.

Halo: Campaign Evolved will release for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and PC on 28 July, 2026.
Marking the 25th anniversary of the Halo series, it’s a remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved which was released back in 2001.
The game aims to be a “faithful” but “modernised” remake which will debut the series on PlayStation for the first time, and it’ll also be coming to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate on Day 1.
