2025 AAA RPG finally gets free slice for those on the fence about picking it up

For those who were on the fence about playing last year’s Monster Hunter Wilds, Capcom is now giving you a chance to play the game for free.

Although its PC performance was a little controversial at launch, Monster Hunter Wilds was one of the most popular RPGs from last year, released within a sea of other massive games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.

Despite its popularity, there are many people who missed out on the game at launch due to various reasons; price, platforms, availability—you name it.

If you did miss out on it at the time, Capcom is giving you a chance to catch up thanks to a new free demo which has PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.

The Monster Hunter Wilds prologue demo includes the game’s fabled character creator which many players enjoyed at launch, with a huge array of options for them to pick from.

In addition to that, the demo features the first three chapters you can play through for free, with the demo ending at Chapter 1-3: Forest Findings.

Capcom has made sure to state that certain features of Monster Hunter Wilds—such as online functions and photo mode—are not available in the demo. Which is a bit of a shame, considering how much fun players have with photo modes.

It also reiterates that the content of the demo is subject to change or discontinuation at any time, so bear that in mind if you’re putting off playing it for the time being.

To install the demo for Monster Hunter Wilds, simply go to the Steam store page and yoink it from there.

Monster Hunter Wilds' new free demo is a great way to experience a small chunk of the game if you're still undecided

With a new expansion titled Monster Hunter Wilds: Ascendance on the way next year, we can’t help but feel now is the right time to jump into the game and see if you’ll like it one way or another.

If you do end up grabbing the demo, you’ll need around 26 GB of free storage space on your PC or console to download it. Make sure to set aside an hour or two to play the demo through to completion.

Last month, Capcom announced price cuts and new bundles for Monster Hunter Wilds that would come into place from 4 August.

The new bundles consist of the Extras Cosmetic DLC Collection, the Cosmetic DLC Collection, and the Gold Edition, which each feature a different number of DLCs you can pick up for Monster Hunter Wilds.

This has also come with a permanent price reduction. The standard version of the game now costs £34.99, a lot cheaper than my estimation I made last month. Meanwhile, the Gold Edition costs £69.99.

With this and the new playable demo, it’s pretty clear that Capcom wants to drive up interest in Monster Hunter Wilds ahead of the release of Ascendance, which comes out in 2027.
