One of Xbox's most unusual cult classics has received an unexpected upgrade, giving a beloved game fresh life on PC more than two decades after its original release.
Microsoft has spent much of 2026 bringing its older games to modern hardware, including expanding backwards compatibility to PC players. However, these official releases still rely on emulation, which means they aren't necessarily taking full advantage of what today's computers can do.
As has been the case with the Bloodeborne PC ports, the fan community has stepped in once again, with keen unofficial devs finding ways to rebuild classic console games to run natively on modern systems, often adding improvements that weren't possible on their original hardware.
In this case, it’s one of Rare's most outrageous releases that’s received some special treatment.
Conker: Live & Reloaded gets a free PC port with substantial upgrades
Rare's Conker: Live & Reloaded, the 2005 Xbox remake of 2001's Conker's Bad Fur Day, has received an unofficial native PC port called Conker: Recomped & Reloaded, bringing some substantial improvements to the foul-mouthed squirrel's adventure.

Developed by Mabec Games using the Live & Recompiled project from giacomozama and TGP482, the fan-made release runs directly on Windows and Linux without needing traditional emulation.
As reported by DSOGaming, the biggest improvement is performance, with the game now supporting up to 240fps, alongside modern widescreen and ultrawide resolutions.
There are also numerous graphical enhancements, including improved lighting, more detailed fur, dynamic water effects, and better environmental visuals. Impressively, even the original cutscenes have gotten a visual boost.
Interestingly, the multiplayer side has been given some attention, too, with the original Xbox's System Link mode now supporting online matches using six-word room codes, allowing friends to play together over the internet. Four-player local split-screen is also included, alongside modern controller compatibility, and keyboard and mouse support.
What’s more, there's even an optional mod that removes some of the game's infamous censorship, something fans have previously called for in a particular modern Conker remake.
How to download Conker: Recomped & Reloaded for free

The project is available to download through the ‘Conker: Recomped & Reloaded’ GitHub page, although there's one important requirement.
The catch, on the other hand, is that players must provide an ISO file, essentially a digital copy of their own original Xbox game disc, to install it. Depending on where you’re located, both American and European versions are supported.
Once supplied, the launcher automatically extracts the necessary files and builds the PC version.
It's also worth remembering that since this isn't an official Rare or Microsoft release, certain features are still being tested and may be subject to some technical hiccups depending on your build, including the online multiplayer with more than two players.
