A free fan-made upgrade has made one of Resident Evil's most confusing locations much easier to explore, just as rumours suggest it could return in Resident Evil Requiem DLC.
Spencer Mansion, the setting of the iconic original 1996 survival horror game, is famous for its winding corridors, locked doors, and puzzles that can leave players retracing their steps for ages.
Now, PC players can revisit the home of the franchise's earliest horrors with a modernised map that does much of the remembering for them.
Resident Evil's Spencer Mansion gets a much-needed map upgrade
Released on 25 October, RE1 Annotated Map - Survivor's Notes, brings several quality-of-life improvements to the original Resident Evil's in-game map.
Created by modder eggu, the free download adds room names, item locations, puzzle markers, and indicators showing which keys open particular doors.

There are also markers for typewriters, item boxes, files, and general supplies, helping Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine keep track of their surroundings without repeatedly checking a walkthrough.

Better still, the information changes as players progress. Collected items disappear from the map, completed puzzles no longer show up, and rooms containing overlooked supplies remain highlighted.
Explaining the motivation behind the project on ModDB, the creator wrote: “So I wanted a map that remembers for me. The map shows what is still left, not everything that was ever there.”
Players can choose between showing previously visited rooms, areas revealed by collected maps, or the entire mansion. The last setting risks revealing unexplored locations, but those wanting an easier journey have the option.
The mod supports both playable characters and requires Classic REbirth 1.1.3 or later. However, it's important to note that this mod is designed for the original PC game, not the remake. As well as ModDB, the RE1 Annotated Map - Survivor's Notes mod is available on Nexus Mods.

Why is Spencer Mansion rumoured for Resident Evil Requiem DLC?

Capcom confirmed a story expansion for Resident Evil Requiem in March, although the developer hasn't officially revealed its setting.
However, prominent Resident Evil leaker Dusk Golem previously claimed that Spencer Mansion was originally planned to appear in Requiem before being cut, speculating that it could return in DLC.
The theory gained further attention in October when Requiem writer Haris Orkin discussed Umbrella Corporation co-founder Oswell E. Spencer during Meadowlark Comic Con.
Orkin said: “We have an arc for Spencer in Requiem, you kind of understand that more, and then in the DLC you’ll understand it even further.”
Since Spencer owned the mansion, fans have another reason to suspect that the expansion could revisit the location, although neither Orkin nor Capcom has confirmed its return yet.
