Elden Ring update introducing new progression system to stop us rushing DLC

This is the developers' way to tell us we need to slow down and savour the pain

After waiting what feels like an eternity for the Elden Ring DLC, it’s understandable that gamers are looking to power their way through it; such is their eagerness. Yet, if they’re to truly appreciate this expansion, they need to calm down.

One way which ensures everyone takes the game at a reasonable pace is by introducing an updated progression system, and what do you know, that’s exactly what’s happening. Elden Ring is following other FromSoftware titles and is changing how you progress to avoid you being over-levelled when you arrive at Shadow of the Erdtree.

Can you keep the shadows at bay in Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree?

This mechanic is unique to the DLC area, meaning you won’t experience it outside of the Land of Shadow. According to an interview with FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki, “You will best understand it if you imagine something akin to Attack Power in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. It’s something like an Attack Power separate from existing levels that is only effective within the DLC area.”

This will undoubtedly help when facing the new version of the game’s worst boss, mainly because it’ll take us longer to reach that point, and thus our sanity will be (kind of) saved. Now is the time to start preparing for those battles you know will leave you weeping into your coffee.

Although we now can’t rush the DLC, we can instead choose to analyse every inch of the DLC trailer to find secrets we probably missed. What else are we to do before the DLC launches and we can throw a tantrum in a fit of rage at how much we suck at killing these bosses?

Let’s face it, we’re all terrified by the “Malenia 2.0” boss that’s waiting for us – maybe that’s the real reason FromSoftware has introduced this new system, to save us from ourselves in foolishly thinking we’re ready…?

Shadow of the Erdtree will launch on 21 June 2024.
