If you’re after a game that can be described as Dark Souls meets Elden Ring, then you can bet that it will most likely be a treat for FromSoftware fans.
Without a doubt, famed developer FromSoftware is one of the most talented studios in the video game industry, with each new release standing a better chance than most to be a Game of the Year contender. So it's a big ask for a game to match it, let alone free! If you're still on tenterhooks for any information about their latest Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods, expected to arrive at some point this year, then this this free-to-play indie action RPG might be your cup of tea.
Dark Souls and Elden Ring Fans, Check This Out!
The game in question is called Phyllosoma, developed and published by RespectGuild.
“In a place where reality and hell are twisted together, there is only one goal: Reach the top of the fortress. Fight horrific enemies that seem to have crossed over from hell. Challenge yourself, grow stronger, and press onward. At the summit, face the being that awaits you,” reads the synopsis of the game on Steam.

Check out the trailer, it's brutal and I love it.

After watching the gameplay trailer on Steam, it does look like Phyllosoma has some promise. Sure, it will lack the polish of a AAA studio, and the enemies (at least in the trailer) lack some variety, but it does look like it might have a fun and challenging gameplay loop.
Plus, Phyllosoma won't cost you anything to check out, so the only thing you might waste is a bit of time. If it’s no good, just delete it, or if it is good, then happy days!
That being said, it’s perhaps worth keeping in mind the current Steam user review rating. Since its launch on 20 January 2026, Phyllosoma has been rated as “Mixed” by the community.
Here’s What Some of the Phyllosoma Reviews Had to Say
“Free Soulslike with one level, a few enemies and a lady who also appreciates large swords but not pants, so Waifu enthusiasts should be happy,” wrote BlackBlitzkrieg.
“If you're broke and want a bit of a more easygoing Soulslike, it's pretty solid. However, it also isn't the most polished. While the bag is mixed, it's also free.”
But not every review is positive - you can't please everyone!
“I rushed to the boss, only had one heal and died. I tried a few more times, but the boss is a**.The game is janky, I do not understand why people have upvoted this,” exclaimed a disgruntled Huēhuehcoyōtl.
Much like all of what we have to say, whether a game is fun or not is subjective.
So you might as well check out Phyllosoma if you’re bored for the next hour or so - it's free!
