Classic stealth game remaster confirms brand new free expansion nearly 30 years later

Nightdive Studios has confirmed a brand new expansion for Thief: The Dark Project Remastered, nearly 30 years after the original game’s release.

Announced earlier this year, Thief: The Dark Project Remastered is the latest revival from retro powerhouse Nightdive Studios which brings the game to modern platforms.

All of the content from the original game by Looking Glass Studios has been preserved here (along with the extras from Thief Gold), but what’s more, Nightdive has announced that a brand new expansion will also be included with the game at no extra charge.

The expansion, titled The Tarnished Mirror, was accidentally revealed as part of the Steam achievement leak from last week which made references to the campaign as part of Thief: The Dark Project Remastered’s achievements list.

Following this, Nightdive posted a tongue-in-cheek video referencing this, officially announcing the expansion and pledging to reveal more on November 2, 2026.

The teaser doesn’t really reveal anything, though the video does include a voiceover from Stephen Russell, who played Garrett in the original game. This seemingly does imply that Russell will be reprising his role for The Tarnished Mirror when it releases later this year.

Russell played Garrett in Thief: The Dark Project, reprising the role in Thief II: The Metal Age, Thief: Deadly Shadows and Thief VR: Legacy of Shadow, but was recast for the 2014 reboot, a decision that upset fans.

Thief: The Dark Project Remastered enhances the original

We got to play a bit of Thief: The Dark Project Remastered at Gamescom 2026, where we said that it “enhances the original without taking away the soul”.

The remaster adds official controller support to the game for the first time, introducing an item wheel allowing players to cycle through their weapons and tools with ease, as well as several more quality-of-life features which help to modernise certain aspects of the game.

There’s no set release date for it yet, but Nightdive has stated it’ll be out Winter 2026 for PC, PlayStation 4, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.

Nightdive’s previous remasters include the likes of Doom + Doom II, The Thing: Remastered, and Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster, which were all received positively.

The company makes between 3–5 remasters per year, with 2025 being its busiest year following the releases of I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster, Heretic + Hexen, Outlaws + Handful of Missions: Remaster, and Blood: Refreshed Supply.

Thief: The Dark Project was among one of the most requested titles for Nightdive to remaster given the developer’s reputation and the game’s legendary status within stealth and immersive sim communities.
