The Haunting Of Hill House has the best jump scare of all time, fans say

That's scared the blue out of our jeans.

The Haunting of Hill House has been championed as the show with the most horrifying jumpscare in the whole of the horror genre, which is some high praise. Read on if you so dare.

Light spoilers about the show follow.

Netflix's The Haunting of Hill House occurs across two timelines and explores familial trauma through terrifying supernatural phenomena that sinks its claws into their vulnerable psyches. In 1992, the Crains move into Hill House in order to renovate it and sell it on for a profit. However, Olivia, the mother of the Crain family, suddenly sees the deceased bodies of her two now-adult twins Nell and Luke. She tells her husband Hugh who does the standard horror husband thing of telling her it's all in her head. My kingdom for a horror husband who takes his wife at her word and gets out of the house as soon as possible.

This then inadvertently leads Olivia down a dark path where she tries to kill Nell and Luke and then dies by suicide when she throws herself off the balcony. Over two decades later, the Crains suffer another tragedy and the impact of living in this strange house must be understood if they are to be free of the misfortune that follows them.

In the eighth episode, when siblings Shirley and Theo are racing to Hill House to save their brother Luke from what lies within it, they are arguing over what looked to be a romantic moment between Shirley's husband and Theo. The tensions rise as the two women snipe at each other when a ghost throws her head between them and screams. We won't tell you who this ghost is for fear of spoilers but you can see the scene below:

This moment has gone down in history amongst viewers for scaring the blue out of their jeans - irreversibly. "I couldn't sit in a car for like two days," said one. "Still sh*tting myself now at that car scare, and it’s been about 12 months," added another.

If your curiosity is piqued, then the whole show is available on Netflix alongside showrunner Mike Flanagan's other series, The Haunting of Bly Manor and Midnight Mass.
