Netflix cancels one of the best shows it ever made after 1 season... again

Another show bites the dust

Netflix has done what it arguably does best, axe a TV series everyone loves after a mere single season, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off

It always stings, but unfortunately it’s just the way the world of media works as if the view count is low, the budget is missing or there simply isn’t anywhere else to go with the story, a second season is deemed not to be.

That said I don’t think Scott Pilgrim Takes Off deserved to go to an early grave

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off was a unique take on the graphic novel, which had already been adapted into a fantastic live-action film.

The cast of the film returned in its entirety to lend their voices to a beautifully animated reimagining, that decided to not simply retell the story we’ve seen already but take it in a new, fresh direction.

The first episode played out as you’d expect, only for expectations to be subverted when Scott mysteriously disappears and it’s up to Ramona Flowers to find him.

It wasn’t a hit with everyone, as some did just want to see the comic book story turned into an anime, but the majority of fans vibed with the series and were up for seeing more.

I was certainly one of those people, so it kills me to report that Netflix is not picking up a second season.

Series creator Bryan Lee O’Malley said as much on X, telling fans: “We were recently informed that the show will NOT return,” going on to say only one season was intended in the first place.

It breaks my heart, and I’d imagine it’s breaking many others as well but the work that went into the series, especially bringing back all the live-action actors, makes it nothing short of a miracle that it ever happened in the first place.

If you haven’t read or watched Scott Pilgrim Vs The World, or seen Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, I honestly couldn’t recommend it more.
