GTA 6 fans already complaining game is too 'woke'

GTA 6 fans already complaining game is too 'woke'

It seems the anti-woke brigade is coming for GTA 6

Earlier this week, Rockstar Games finally graced us with the first official trailer for GTA VI and it pretty much broke the internet.

When the Grand Theft Auto VI trailer dropped, we all knew that it would smash records. Within its first several hours, it not only smashed a previous record held by YouTuber MrBeast but at the time of writing, the trailer on the official Rockstar Games channel has over 106 million views, over 9.3 million Likes and 266k Dislikes, as well as over 750k comments.

In this day and age, the word “woke” can have many meanings depending on who you ask. In truth at this point, it’s probably lost all original definition. That being said, at least according to Merriam-Webster.com, the slang definition of woke can mean being “aware of and actively attentive to important societal facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice).”

Almost anything in modern society can have the word woke thrown at it whether it seems justified or not and GTA VI is the latest to be hit by the anti-woke brigade. Even before I started to write this article, I knew exactly why some would be accusing the latest title from Rockstar Games of being “woke”. Seriously, I hate the word woke and it just makes my eyes roll.

Screengrabs of the comments section of the GTA VI trailer on YouTube were shared by Twitter user Rusty Cage. The comments feature the likes of “Not a single white person in this trailer. Big surprise." While another added, “This is white replacement theory,” and “WOKE CRAP. Rockstar has been going to s*** for years now. WILL NOT PLAY”. I wonder what the odds would be on the last person still playing GTA VI? All this outrage is despite the fact, that as mentioned by The Gamer, Miami, the inspiration for one of the cities in GTA VI (Vice City) is one of the most multicultural cities on the planet.

The internet can be a cesspool of racist, homophobic and transphobic comments and it seems that the recent Grand Theft Auto VI trailer has trigged those masses. Sadly, most of us will not be surprised by that. That being said, if the word “woke” is a reflection on society, good or bad and with the GTA series often being a reflection on satirical society, perhaps Grand Theft Auto has always been woke.

GTA VI will be released in 2025 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. At the time of writing Rockstar Games has not announced GTA VI for PC, but I’m sure it will be released on the platform at some point.
