An early download for GTA 6 has left fans feeling confused, with many not even sure what they’re really installing.
In case you missed the news, GTA 6 has a new pre-download on Xbox consoles. If you have an Xbox Series X or Series S, you’ll be able to download a small file straight from the store.
Before you get too excited, keep in mind that GTA 6 is still just under 11 months away from release and this isn’t the full version of the game.
It’s not like you’ll be able to play an early beta version right now or anything.

The download is actually only 328.76MB in size, which is miniscule compared to what the actual size of GTA 6 will be.
Now, fans are confused just what exactly this download actually installs.
“What are you actually downloading though, I'm genuinely curious,” writes one fan on the Xbox Series S Reddit page.
“312 MB COD devs could learn a thing or two,” joked another comment, poking fun at the fact that Call of Duty requires hundreds of gigabytes depending on which games and modes you have installed.
In truth, the file is just a few preliminary files that will signal your Xbox to download the full game when it launches in May next year.
There isn’t really much point to having it on your console for the time being, but it does mean you’ll be able to download the game as soon as the pre-load becomes available.
“For what purpose other than taking up space for the next 11 months,” a third comment reads. “Doesn't matter how small or big. I'll never understand you people that preorder digital games then download nothing but a picture for a year.”
GTA 6 will release on Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 on 26th May, 2026.
