GTA VI fans are fearing potential censorship of the upcoming game, following recent censorship controversies in games like Dispatch.
In case you missed the news, Dispatch released on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 last week and became the subject of controversy surrounding forced censorship of certain content.
It’s sparked a conversation surrounding censorship in games, particularly for titles which have famously featured graphic or adult content, such as the Grand Theft Auto series.
Coming around two weeks after news that Rockstar is facing pressure to release a censored version of the game in Russia, gamers are now worried that certain aspects of GTA VI such as violence or graphic language could be toned down for the full release.
Could GTA VI Be Toned Down In Terms Of Violence And Graphic Content?
“Could GTA 6 violence get toned down?” writes one fan on the GTA VI Reddit page.

“I do not want it to happen, I want the freedom GTA games have always provided and alongside all the violence, because it is fun. BUT, the level of realism we’re expecting from GTA 6 creates a real dilemma when it comes to violence,” reads the comment in question.

“On one hand, the violence has to stay consistent. If Rockstar suddenly toned it down, it would feel unbalanced and out of place. And if they go the second route, it’ll be obvious it was done to avoid backlash and appease modern audiences.
“They can’t make a game with a $2 billion budget that looks better than anything we’ve ever seen, then turn around and give us weaker or censored violence than what was in Red Dead Redemption 2. That would feel like a step backwards.”
“Hate to say it but i have a feeling it will, tho i hope it doesn’t,” reads one comment.
“I guess they leave it as it is. So not tone it down, won't raise it either. So you won't see body parts flying when you roadkill pedestrians,” reads another comment.

It sounds like the game is safe for now. I doubt that Rockstar will tone down the violence or graphic content compared to previous entries in the series, as it wouldn't want to risk alienating customers.
Other recent censorship controversies include Ready or Not’s 2025 console ports, where dismemberment and nudity was toned down due to tighter restrictions on those platforms.
Similarly, 2025’s Wuchang: Fallen Feathers also received its own form of censorship, where many of its historical boss fights were changed from being defeated to simply “fainting from exhaustion”.
Both of these instances resulted in review bombing from players, which saw their user rating scores plummet in places like the Steam store.
