A fan-made GTA 4 remaster has just received a new graphics comparison, making it easy to see the improvements that have been made across the board.
When it comes to games that we’d like to see get official remasters, Grand Theft Auto 4 may not necessarily be up at the top of that list.
Even for a nearly two decades-old game, it still looks great after all. And if you’re on PC or Xbox, it’s still perfectly playable on current hardware.
Still, it’d be nice to see what modern graphics cards could do to GTA 4, and that’s where this fan-made remaster project comes in.
Advert
As we reported last month, the GTA 4 remaster project is being developed by modder xoxor4d and seems to be coming along nicely.
It adds real-time path tracing to the 17-year-old game, overhauling everything from the lighting to the reflections. It makes everything look fresh and shiny, and could certainly pass for a brand new game released in 2025.
Well, a new video from YouTuber MxBenchmarkPC showcases the updated graphics alongside the original, to really give you a sense of what has been changed. Check out the video below if you’d like to play spot the difference.
GTA 4 remaster is coming along nicely
The video showcases some gameplay using various graphics presets, including 1400p and 4K resolutions, and various DLSS and frame generation settings. What's also impressive is it seems that the mod isn't really upscaling the textures, so it's amazing to see how changing the lighting and reflections gives the game such a dramatic makeover.
As for the hardware required to run this mod efficiently, xoxor4d hasn’t confirmed specific specs that you’ll need. With the project still being in its early access phase, any hardware confirmed to run the remaster may need to be tweaked later on as optimisations are made.
MxBenchmarkPC’s specs include an RTX 5080 and i7 14700F, which is a rather beefy setup. However, given the changes made to GTA 4’s graphics, I can certainly see why this may be a requirement to get the mod running efficiently.
As for if we’ll ever see an official GTA 4 remaster by Rockstar Games, nothing has been officially confirmed.
Rumours of a remaster have cropped up in recent months, with notable Rockstar insider Tez2 claiming that one is in development. But with the developer currently busy getting GTA 6 out the door, it’s possible this may come during a quieter period.
