It may be a while before we can play GTA VI, but this GTA IV remaster might just be the thing to tide us over until then.
Okay, so we’re still a while away from being able to play Grand Theft Auto VI, and if you’re a PC player, you’ll have to wait even longer.
So it’s probably the best time to go back to those older beloved classics. We’ve all played far too much GTA V in our time, but GTA IV still remains as one of the best games in the series.
Now, you might have a good reason to revisit Liberty City with this fancy upcoming RTX Remix mod, which will be available for free when it launches.

The mod completely overhauls the visuals of GTA IV with modern graphics. I mean, to be fair, it’s not like GTA IV looks bad or anything. Considering its age, the visuals have aged rather well. But this mod really makes it look quite special.
However, this mod adds real-time Path Tracing to the game, giving everything from the reflections to lighting a complete makeover. And frankly, it looks pretty gorgeous.
Modder xoxor4d has re-iterated that the mod is still a work-in-progress. We do have a video of the progress made so far, and it looks great so far. Check that out below.
The video showcases the player controlling Niko Bellic, having him walk slowly around Liberty City to get a feel for the new lighting and shadow effects. There is also some driving, which shows off the reflections in the windows quite well.

There isn’t any ETA on when the mod will be released. As of right now, xoxor4d has a Patreon where patrons can try out a test build. However, it’s not available to the public and there doesn’t seem to be a confirmed release date yet.

Is Rockstar remastering Grand Theft Auto 4?
As for whether or not GTA IV will receive an official remaster by Rockstar Games, nothing has been confirmed yet. Rumours of a remastered version for current-gen consoles have surfaced over the past year, including from notable Rockstar insider Tez2.

Considering the rather poor reception to the classic 3D trilogy remasters, it’s possible that Rockstar may be holding off on a GTA IV remaster for the time being.
Considering it probably has its hands full with GTA VI at the moment, I’d imagine something like this may be more likely to come during a quieter period.
