Two weeks before the release of Grand Theft Auto VI, many gamers are going for “One Last Drive” in their favourite older GTA games.
For fans of the series who fondly remember GTA IV, recent updates for the RTX Remaster mod are available now, and make it well worth exploring in the period leading up to Grand Theft Auto VI’s release.
We’ve covered xoxor4d’s RTX remaster mod for Grand Theft Auto IV before, but the last few releases have introduced some considerable improvements, which massively improve the way the 2008 game looks.

Grand Theft Auto 4 RTX Remaster mod is worth a play if you're waiting for GTA 6
Release 1.7.3 makes some changes to the mod so it’s compatible with the new version of the Rockstar Games Launcher. A small update, but important for those attempting to play the mod on the most recent version of GTA IV.
Meanwhile, the mod’s previous update also brought over some new improvements. Weather configs were updated to reduce cloud depth and other settings, which should improve performance.
Alongside this, the timecycle module now only writes the runtime weather values when they change, which will also reduce the load on your computer’s CPU.
Other changes include adding support for DLSS-NR and HDR settings in the user menu, and some changes to graphics presets, which improve visual clarity and performance.
Meanwhile, other settings introduced in 1.7.2 include removing hardcoded graphics settings, which allows the RTX remix to pick an appropriate preset for the user depending on their hardware configuration.
This extends to adjusting more settings, such as disabling homogeneous volumetrics and cloud LOD usage, which will also optimise the performance of your game.
Another recent update to GTA IV’s RTX remaster mod introduced support for DLSS 5, a feature of modern GPUs which has been controversial due to the way it changes intended art styles set by the developer, and has an overall “AI slop” look about it.
However, with the appropriate settings, DLSS 5 has been able to improve the look and feel of some games, and Grand Theft Auto IV’s RTX remaster seems to be using the technology to make Liberty City feel more authentic to its real-life New York City counterpart, without feeling too glossy or false.
If you’d like to check out the RTX Remaster mod for Grand Theft Auto IV, you can download it now from xoxor4d’s GitHub page. You'll need to own a copy of Grand Theft Auto IV on PC, as well as a computer powerful enough to run ray-tracing and improved graphical effects. With two weeks to go until the launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, now seems to be the perfect time for a quick spin around Liberty City.
