Bethesda’s Fallout series is without question one of the most popular RPGs of all time and a series that fans simply cannot get enough of.

Actually, the Fallout franchise was a popular RPG series long before Bethesda’s parent company, ZeniMax Media got hold of the license. The first game in the series was Fallout in 1997 when it was developed and published by Interplay Productions.

Check out the Fallout 4 trailer below!

It wasn't until the iconic Fallout 3 was released in 2008 and was developed by Bethesda Game Studios that the series changed forever. For many, Fallout 3 is considered to be the best the series has to offer with Metacritic scores of 90 and above, cementing its place as an all-time great.

Two years later, developed by Obsidian Entertainment, Fallout: New Vegas followed, a game that was originally intended to be an expansion to Fallout 3 and then Fallout 4 was released in 2015. We were then treated to the MMORPG Fallout 76 in 2018, which had a very troublesome launch, to say the least. Though from what we hear, Fallout 76 is in a much better state now.

As for what the future holds, Fallout 4 is supposed to be getting a next-gen update this year, similar to The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Anniversary Edition, but as of yet we don’t have a release date. Hopefully, it will actually arrive long before Fallout 5.

Yet, what if we could get a more modern version of the Fallout game that was released in 1997 powered by the current engine? Well, that’s exactly what an indie developer intends with the Fallout: Vault 13 mod. According to the dedicated moddb.com page: “Fallout: Vault 13 is an upcoming modification for Fallout 4 that seeks to remake and reimagine Fallout 1 in Fallout 4's engine.”

There is a developer diary video on the mod page and by the looks of things, Fallout: Vault 13 is looking very promising indeed. However, it’s stated in the video that the mod has been in production for a year. That video was posted in 2022, but there were some new screenshots posted earlier this year. At this time, there is no release date for the mod, but hopefully, we’ll get an update in the near future.

If you want a more modern taste of the series now, both Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 are available on PC, PlayStation and Xbox. What’s more, both titles are currently included in the Xbox Game Pass and PS Plus libraries.
