Fallout 3 isn’t getting remastered, Fallout Season 2’s finale has come and gone with not even a whisper of a new game so the dream is dead, for now.
There is of course still hope for the future as we mustn’t forget that Fallout 3 was named alongside The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion back when Microsoft was fighting with the FTC, and with the latter getting a remaster surely the former is due one too.
Unfortunately that’s all in the future. It’s the here and now that gamers are disappointed about but if you really want to play an enhanced version of Fallout 3 look no further than Tales of Two Wastelands.
This handy-dandy expansion mod is truly remarkable as it essentially bridges the gap between Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, quite literally.

The full maps from both games are combined with transportation included to get from Washington D.C to the Mojave in seconds.
It does a lot more than just merge the maps too as due to it being the first fully-3D Fallout game, Fallout 3 can feel a little outdated to play now. Fallout: New Vegas can too but most players will overlook that due to the quality of its story and quests.

Tale of Two Wastelands updates Fallout 3 with all the bells and whistles New Vegas introduced, making it arguably the definitive version until the actual remaster comes out.
You might be wondering how the stories and quests work with this mod and the simple answer is not much is changed. Both games can be played through normally but because both exist on the same file it means you can take weapons, armour and even companions from Fallout 3 into Fallout: New Vegas, and vice-versa.
The only caveat is you need to own a copy of both games for this mod to work but that’s not a tall order. You can get both from Steam for about £10.
It’s a very, very impressive mod though and I love what it does to Fallout 3, as not counting the original Fallout RPGs the third game does show its age unlike other games.
As far as free expansions go you really can’t go wrong with it and since we’ll probably be waiting a while for the actual Fallout 3 remaster this feels like the next best thing.
