Cyberpunk 2077 players divided over leaving Night City for sequel

Where could the future take us?

Following on from a recent announcement by CD Projekt talking about its future, a discussion recently kicked off surrounding where the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel should take place.

Yesterday saw CD Projekt take to social media to make announcements surrounding the amount of copies it has managed to sell since Cyberpunk 2077 was first released almost four years ago.

Check out Cyberpunk 2077's next-gen update launch trailer below!

It also took the time to reveal that The Witcher 4 was now in full-scale production and that CDPR was once again teaming up with Netflix to work on a brand-new Cyberpunk 2077 inspired animated show.

With Cyberpunk 2, codenamed Project Orion, also in early development, it has got fans thinking if the sequel should remain based in Night City or if CDPR should broaden its horizons.

Cyberpunk 2077 took place in the futuristic metropolis known as Night City, which happens to be located in present-day San Diego, California.

However, a recent post over on r/cyberpunkgame begged the question as to if the highly-anticipated sequel should instead take place in Chicago, following the discovery of an in-game poster.

“Thoughts on the next Cyberpunk being in Chicago?” The post asked.

“I've always seen this ad and always thought it would be cool if we can go to both cities in the next game.”

The ad in question is found in-game and promotes the ability to “travel from Chicago to Night City in under three hours”.

Whereas some users believe that this is instead a reference to “one of the recurring critiques of American capitalism in contemporary leftism” and that “it makes sense for it to show up as a joke in Cyberpunk.

And that it still doesn’t exist in 2077 with their technology is a pretty damning and funny indictment of unrestrained capitalism.”

Others believe that although a fresh location could be good, Night City is what is truly at the heart of the Cyberpunk franchise.

“Maybe as a DLC but not the main setting. Night City is the main character of Cyberpunk,” one user commented.

With the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel still being in early development, it will be a long time before we discover where it will take place but that is not going to stop fans from making their guesses.
