To multiplayer or not to multiplayer? That was seemingly the internal question asked at CD Projekt RED when Cyberpunk 2077 was in its development phase.
However, with the Poland-based team planning to stick with single-player for the hit RPG, some fans were left feeling disappointed with the urge to cause chaos around Night City with friends being a strong one.
Although plenty of modders have attempted bringing a multiplayer mode to Cyberpunk 2077 over the past five years, it has never been officially supported.
That being said, with Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel now in production, could we see that long-awaited multiplayer mode?
Advert
Well, according to the Polish gaming press, which has since been translated and shared online, Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer is just one of many projects that CD Projekt RED is currently working on.
Alongside work on The Witcher 4, a possible The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt DLC and various other projects such as ‘Sirius’ and ‘Canis Majoris’, a multiplayer mode may also be in the pipeline.
“Mateusz Chrzanowski, an analyst at Noble Securities, has updated the schedules and budgets for CD Projekt's flagship projects in his latest report,” the translation, recently shared to r/GamingLeaksAndRumours reads.
“He anticipates a paid add-on for The Witcher 3 in May 2026 and the release of The Witcher 4 in Q4 2027, along with a significant increase in production and marketing costs for the entire trilogy.

“Further down the line, there will be the Cyberpunk “Orion” with a multiplayer component, and reshuffles at ‘Sirius’ and “Canis Majoris.”
“All this will take place amid market competition with “GTA VI.””
Although the majority of the report centers around The Witcher 4, which is the next title expected to launch from CDPR, there was a mention of Cyberpunk 2’s potential multiplayer mode.
There Is Still a Long Wait
Not only that but it is rumoured that the highly anticipated sequel will launch to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Cyberpunk 2077, which will take us to 2030.
According to Noble Securities, 135 developers are currently working on the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel at the time of writing.
However, the team is expected to double in size within two years when development ramps up.
““The desire to integrate multiplayer mode into the production prompted us to extend the production time beyond the state resulting from the progress of work on the benchmark W4,” the report reads.
“”As a result, the budget has grown to PLN 1.5 billion, and we expect the release in Q4 2030 (the 10th anniversary of CP77)”.
So, the good news is that Cyberpunk 2077’s sequel may include a multiplayer mode, or at least come with a spin-off game that does.
However, the bad news is that we may not be seeing it arrive until at least 2030.
Of course, all of this has not been confirmed by CD Projekt RED itself so it is worth taking with a pinch of salt.
However, it is still promising news for those wishing to team up with friends in the next iteration of Night City.
