Cyberpunk 2077 Multiplayer Update Leaves Gamers Feeling Uncertain

Could it be too ambitious?

Whether or not Cyberpunk 2077 should have featured a multiplayer mode has been an area of contention for players since the hit RPG was released back in 2020.

With some players happy to experience the story in single-player whilst others would have loved to hit the streets of Night City with friends, CD Projekt RED has stayed firm in its decision to not feature a multiplayer mode.

Well, in the first game at least.

According to a recent job listing posted by CD Projekt RED, the highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 sequel may finally feature the long awaited multiplayer mode.

On the job listing which was posted on Twitter, the studio revealed that it was looking for a Lead Network Engineer which would work on some of its upcoming projects such as the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel and The Witcher 4.

However, it was one line in particular that eagle-eyed fans noticed.

It read: “As a Lead Network Engineer, you and your team will play a pivotal role in designing and implementing the network architecture and online systems.”

Additionally, some of the day-to-day tasks of this position would include developing and optimising multiplayer systems, including matchmaking.

It is doubtful that The Witcher 4 will include multiplayer so it is safe to assume that CDPR is referring to Cyberpunk 2 here.

Of course, this is not confirmation but it is the most assurance we have received that the hit sequel will indeed feature the fan-requested mode.

However, following the less-than-smooth launch of Cyberpunk 2077 back in 2020, it is understandable that fans are worried that the sequel will follow suit, especially if it also has a multiplayer and online component to worry about.

As a result, uncertain fans took to r/gamingnews to share their thoughts.

“A multiplayer mode like in the GOTY Winners Baldur's Gate 3 or Elden Ring would be nice,” one more hopeful fan shared.

However, one user over on Twitter shared their concerns.

“Didn't [CDPR] somewhat recently say they learned their lesson from Cyberpunk 2077 about staying in their lane, doing what they know they're good at?” They asked.

“I wouldn't mind a separate multiplayer spin-off project, but I just don't want it taking away from the sequel.”

Another user agreed, adding, “Hope it's like GTA Online and NOT mandatory at all.

I also hope it's unlike GTA Online and NOT a microtransaction hellscape that gets more love than the single-player campaign.”

With some fans eager to dive back into Night City (or wherever we may end up) with friends whilst others are more trepidatious about possible issues that come alongside a multiplayer mode, it is up to CD Projekt Red to make the right decision when the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel is launched in the future.
