Elder Scrolls Returns in 2026, Skyblivion Drops Fresh Gameplay Tease

Coming later this year.

The Skyblivion development team has just dropped a fresh look at the upcoming mod, which is set to release some time this year.

Originally planned for release in 2025, Skyblivion was delayed into this year to put the finishing touches on the mod and ensure it’d be ready for release.

As the modding team prepares for release, a new update has been shared on the Skyblivion Bluesky account, with new screenshots posted to give us a glimpse of the mod.

Taken by modder Hinimoto, the screenshots feature Wendelbek, a large Ayleid ruin that can be found east of Bravil in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

Comparing Skyblivion’s version of Wendelbek with the original, there are some clear differences here. For example, it’s a lot darker than the original, but makes use of organic lighting a lot more efficiently. I like that it looks a lot more realistic, similar to Skyrim’s Ayleid ruins.

Skyblivion is a free fan-made remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion in Skyrim’s engine, porting over the entirety of Cyrodiil and its locations, NPCs, and towns.

A total of 223 quests are planned for the expansion, with some being ports of original quests, as well as some fresh ones made by the modding team. However, it won’t have Oblivion’s expansions such as Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine, as they’re coming in a post-launch update.

In addition to this, it’ll also have some of the gameplay mechanics from Oblivion that didn’t make it into Skyrim, like the class system and lockpicking.

Altogether, while it'll be using the Skyrim engine, it won't be similar to that game in terms of mechanics or controls.

It was originally going to be released last year, though Bethesda’s official Oblivion Remaster disrupted these plans a little, and the team announced in December that the mod was delayed into 2026.

An exact release date has not been shared yet by the Skyblivion team, but we imagine that it won’t be long before the expansion is ready for release, considering how close it came in 2025.

Either way, the mod should tide us over until Bethesda releases The Elder Scrolls VI, which is currently still quite early in development despite being announced as far back as 2018.
